THE WORDS
As the small but select pack gathered in the Bull Inn car park there were hats and jackets in profusion, due to the low temperature and stiff breeze, even for those who don’t usually bother. There was earnest discussion about how wet it would be as the hounds mused on the wind-chill factor. Madness confessed to having felt better due to a “boy’s night out with beers and a curry” the night before, but said he had consumed lots of coffee. After a quick photo Ronlet gave the briefing to the hounds who were all hopping up and down in anticipation (or was it the cold?): “4 smiley faces, 2 whip-ins and dabs anywhere as we had to keep them out of the wind, checking” and the pack were gone! Everyone was keen to get moving and to warm up. After an initial look around the pack and hares moved off to the South-West and out into the countryside.
We quickly warmed up and fell into a routine with Ronlet supervising the leaders and BrEW making sure that no-one was left behind. Silent Running was in the lead through a farm and doing well, but then spoiled it by shouting “On one” and “On two” when he had not passed a check Of course ‘On Pres denied this, but he was still pinged for the words as a result (obviously a bit rusty having not hashed for a month). A long ploughed field provided Alamein the chance to run his own line though some nice deep mud, then managed to find a puddle to wash it off and drink from, as if he had planned it all. Birdseye was first to find a smiley-face. Silent Running was on hand when Birdseye found the second smiley after both had a good gallop in the lead. There were plenty of checks to ensure bags of checking for all hares. The pack spotted a sickly rook and gave it a wide berth in case it had avian flu. Walt was cruising along making it look easy. On a long run in to the first whip-in both BrEW and Madness were a long way adrift – both falling foul to that old adage that “It goes right through you in the cold”. We all told Madness that the coffee would catch him out.
After some more cunning checks we emerged at the second whip in on a road. At this stage we could see the pub and the obvious but wrong option drew Silent Running despite Alamein’s best efforts to hold him back. However another smiley quickly saw Silent Running and Alamein retake the lead. The pace quickened as the pub was now very close and clearly visible. At the next check the route was found by Birdseye and was directly away from the pub. Such cunning, such torment and at the hour mark too! The route was into a park like field and Madness was first to realise that we were going to run round 3 of the 4 sides of it, whilst the rear markers cut the corner. Alamein was looking relaxed as he had to be lifted over a long series of styles as the routes under were fenced off, Silent Running was tiring with the weight-lifting but was perfecting his “dog under one arm and leap” technique over the styles. Then suddenly the closely grouped pack was passing the church, the BH3, the stocks and a final sprint back to the pub led by Birdseye. Somehow through all this Walt had kept steadfastly in third place throughout, making best use of his experience and watching the front-runners make the wrong choice. Of course, he will tell you different!
The grateful hounds thanked BrEW and Ronlet for a really good trail and for keeping the rain off. With the wind-chill working in our favour, the pack changed in record time and was quickly into the pub for a welcome drink from the tipple mug. A table near a roaring open fire and some jolly good food too! After eating ‘On Pres left a tad early to “watch the rugby” or perhaps to oil that rust.
