THE WORDS

Birdseye and Gail were there to meet us at Bokerley Junction on the site of a former Roman Road on the Dorset/Hampshire border. (No prior warning had been given that passports were required). It was a bright sunny April evening on the Cranborne Chase.

Birdseye gave a very vague brief as to what we were to expect. We crossed the A354 for the off with Madness finding the first dabs in one direction and Warthog the other, which proved correct over the World War Two rifle range on the edge of Martin Down.

Following a few more checks, Walt was lucky once again finding 3 correct trails in a row, but his luck ran out when the hare took up the lead and took us towards the village of Pentridge in the shadow of Penbury Knoll. In the village centre, BrEW chose the trail through the village and Ronlet, foolishly we all thought, towards Penbury Knoll, which turned out to be correct. This resulted in a 1km stretch rising to 185m above sea level, which almost proved too much for Madness and Walt, but they finally joined the rest of the pack for a well-deserved rest and to enjoy the excellent view over the Cranborne Chase, which was announced as the halfway point of tonight’s proceedings.

Fortunately for some of us, from this point it all looked down hill to home. Warthog having been here before picked the correct trail, which lead us along the edge of Pentridge Down. At the next check, BrEW and Ronlet were on, but Madness and Walt decided a short cut was required so Birdseye pointed them in the direct of the Jubilee Trail further down. At the next check we reformed into one pack and Warthog chose the correct trail along the Jubilee Trail in the direction of Martin Down.

A gentle downward slope was enjoyed for about 1km until we arrived at a check on Bokerley Ditch on the edge of a plantation. BrEW, Madness and Warthog all foolishly chose trails away from the general direction of home, so Ronlet and Walt took the sensible option towards Martin Down and home. At this point the sun disappeared over Cranborne Chase and conditions turned decidedly colder.

Crossing Martin Down we passed evening walkers and reached the butts of the old rifle range again, then, at last, home was in sight and darkness was beginning to fall on the end of another interesting Hash, well set through some splendid countryside.

Following a quick rub down we headed to the Inn on the Chase for food and beer, the steaks were of excellent quality and it was some time later that we made our weary way home.
