THE WORDS
From our sports correspondent “Old Gasper”
After a week off for Easter, the pack assembled in their numbers in the car park at the back of the White Horse in the pretty little village of Hinton St. Mary, just north of Sturminster Newton. As it happens, the numbers concerned were one hare, four hounds and one real hound, so we guessed we might all have to do some work on this one.
Silent Running briefed us to expect two whip-ins and some smiley faces. Blobs would be found on the left, except when they weren’t, and we would be sticking with the traditional “three blobs and you’re on”. So with Alamein pulling at the lead with a much greater power to weight ratio than seemed physically possible, we ambled to the front of the pub for our photo, before sprinting off in all directions looking for sawdust.
It should be noted that many of the hounds displayed the sartorial elegance for which they have become justly famed. Entente and Madness, in a show of international fraternity, were dressed in tight black lycra shorts topped with white BH3 T-shirts. Ça Va was beautifully prepared for arctic conditions despite the warmth of the evening. And Alamein had clearly decided that the most appropriate appearance for a real hound was mud, which he found for himself almost immediately.
Despite being weighed down by many layers of clothing, which were soon tied around her waist, Ça Va was on extraordinarily good form, and led the pack at speed for much of the time, in contrast to Madness who combined a propensity for finding false trails with a sluggishness which he was heard to attribute to a recent diet of pork pies.
The trail took us Northish via Stearts Lane through fields with electric fences to a long climb through nettles, thankfully not yet high enough to cause serious problems, and on to a whip-in by a road junction at Walton Elm House. More fields and electrics followed as we eventually turned southwards. (Oh how we turned. In truth I’ve no idea where we went; I’m just looking at the map and guessing.)
A key feature of the hash was the hare’s devious use of smiley faces. There we were, following the trail, and then we’d find the face, with its insolent sneering grin. Back we would run to the last blob to search for the correct route, eventually to find that it brought us out onto the same track the smiley face had been on, but a bit further along. What cruelty!
For most of the time Entente and Ça Va were the front runners, and so it was that Entente found the first face and Ça Va the second. A competitive edge began to develop, and Entente seemed inordinately pleased to find the next face, giving him the lead at 2-1. However this spurred Ça Va on to greater effort as she launched herself over a fence and a water trough in order to score a late equaliser and make the contest a 2-2 score draw.
It was towards the end of the hash that Walt started to show some late form to lead the pack on the way back along Marriage Lane and into the roads behind the pub, where we finally emerged, warm and panting, and ready for a refreshing drink (or several, in some cases) in the White Horse.
