THE WORDS
So it was that the pack of 8 joined the Hare at Shillingstone on a fine and bright evening with blue skies, after a wet day, which had concerned some that waterproofs would be required. The hare, Walt, gathered the pack for the brief and welcomed Mark Vincent and his son Edward to their first hash. Walt then briefed on the hash signs and the trail, mentioning dabs and some whip-ins, plus a hint that there were no smilie faces. Ça Va then took the team photo by the pub and we were off checking. In a model of how not to do it Silent Running and Entente were soon 200 yards behind.
With Birdseye leading, the trail took a worrying trend in the general directions of Up and Hambledon Hill. We also discovered that dabs were placed either side of the trail, which caught a few out early on. Three times Silent Running used the old “my laces are undone” ploy to take a rest – he must be really unfit just now! This gave Ça Va and then Walt a chance to be towed along for a while by Alamein, who was so desperate to lead the pack he appeared not to notice his owner being left behind. Mark and Edward were well up with the front-runners early on and getting the cries right, with Brûlée either in attendance or doing her own thing. Warthog was also well to the fore but was fooled into checking into a field off the trail. He then took a massive “parallel” to meet us at the next check. Here Madness and Warthog recognised the terrain as part of the Stickler route and all our fears about going up hill returned. To our relief the trail soon turned North and away from Hambledon Hill. Next we found ourselves at a check and negotiating a high wall around a church. This caused a laughter-filled pause as half the pack stumbled around with a squirming Brûlée at head height to get her over the wall. In all the excitement Warthog dashed off right and vanished. The pack then dithered at the next check waiting for Warthog to reappear only to discover he was out in front and on the right route, where he and Birdseye led us through Child Okeford and over a bridge across the River Stour.
Leaving Child Okeford by a footpath the pack spread out and jumped over a stream. Warthog looked disappointed – he’d rather we ran along in the stream! We then ran into open fields where Ça Va chose the right trail for a while and led the pack to a Whip in on a road. Here Silent Running chose the right option (uphill) into an industrial estate and onto the Old Railway. Just as Mark took the lead the hare waved us all back to the old rail station to keep us on the trail – a sort of smilie face without the sawdust!
The next whip-in was at a church lych gate, including roof and seats. Led by Entente, the seated pack all agreed it was the nicest and most luxurious whip-in we’d ever been to. A few hundred yards later we passed the BH3 and we were soon back at the pub. Walt got a good round of applause and our thanks for a good well thought out and interesting trail on a perfect Spring evening for running.
At this stage the thirsty pack became concerned. The cry went up “that pub looks shut to me”. Not to fear, a kindly local explained that it was just about to open. So after the traditional huffing and puffing and a quick change we repaired to the bar for a good drink of “Courage”. Here Walt, as On Badger, played another blinder and pretty well filled the hare roster until mid July.
