THE WORDS
Silent Running was there to meet us at the Okeford Hill viewing point car park near the famous Okeford Beacon, which has been used on many recent important occasions. It was a sultry June evening on the North Dorset Hills.
As there were 3 virgin hashers amongst us, Silent Running gave a very detailed brief as to what we were to expect. We crossed the road for the off with Warthog finding the first dabs in the direction of an area known locally as Cross Dyke woods.
Following a few more checks, Warthog was lucky once again finding 3 correct trails in a row, but his luck ran out when Mark Vincent, complete with sunglasses, took over the running for a short period in the woods. Soon the pack emerged from the woods. Ronlet emerged later following her usual comfort break. (Yes, I did notice). At this point we were 223m above sea level and enjoying the spectacular views.
Warthog again took up the running leading the pack across an open field towards Bonsley Common woods. A whip-in was then called to allow virgin hashers Mel & Debbie to catch up and grab a breath of air whilst the rest of the pack enjoyed the excellent views. We were all refreshed so it was off into the next woods with Edward Vincent in the lead.
On entering the woods the undergrowth became heavy and it became darker and many of the hounds including Jibber, Kinky Bugger and Edward Vincent lost their way and went off wandering in completely the wrong direction. The halfway point of tonight’s proceedings had now been reached, Mel & Debbie were in need of a short cut, so Silent Running pointed them in the right direction.
For the rest of the pack, it was deeper into the woods and gradually uphill. At the next check BrEW took the lead for a short time. Warthog had picked the wrong trail for a change. Mel & Debbie rejoined us and we soon broke out of the woods into bright sunlight and open fields. Mark & James Vincent led the pack to the next whip-in, which was welcomed and enjoyed by all including Alamein who was put into a trough by Silent Running for a well deserved drink and cool off.
The end was almost in sight as we skirted around the other side of Cross Dyke woods, Madness & Walt were almost out of breath but still managing to keep up, Edward Vincent was still occasionally wandering off the trail at some checks. At last, home was in sight and the end of another interesting Hash, well set through some splendid countryside.
On Pres then summoned an impromptu meeting to elect Hash Handles to Mark Vincent who became “Shady” for wearing sunglasses and Edward Vincent who became “The Wanderer” for wandering away from the trail on many occasions. Following a quick rub down we headed to The Crown at Winterborne Stickland for food and beer.
Footnote from On Words:
Ronlet can assure everyone that a comfort break was not required – she was so far ahead of the pack at that stage she had time to check out a false trail. ‘Onest.
