THE WORDS

So it was that the pack met in the Stroud Bridge layby in the Wareham Forest on a mild and warm evening ideal for a spot of running. Madness gave the usual briefing and I find myself unable to remember the details other than the fact that our hare had just finished laying the trail and that he was displaying a fine bright red knotted hankie on his head – apparently they are all the rage in St Tropez this year! The mention of 7 Km main trail got Ça Va’s eyebrows moving up and down. The hare offered an extra prize for the person giving him the largest pinecone at the end of the hash and after a quick photo of the pack by BrEW we were off.

Warthog was first into the lead and led us down the first of the many trails into the woods. At one of the first bends Alamein was going so fast that Silent Running, being dragged along behind, ran wide and into the gorse. BrEW was also doing really well and finding the way at some of the early checks. Day Glo led us up onto the Woolsbarrow Hill Fort site to a whip in, a chance to enjoy the excellent view and a discussion about if those mounds were barrows or not. We then had to retrace our steps to pick up the trail. Before long we were weaving along in a long tunnel like path through what felt like miles of rhododendrons – but with no dabs. Was our hare being that economical with the precious dust? To be fair there was nowhere to turn off anyway. Having emerged from our tunnel we then did a number of other twists and turns with Birdseye, Day Glo, BrEW and Warthog taking it in turns to lead the pack. Ronlet was doing a grand job limping along with a knackered knee (old age).

We emerged from the woods at what I now know is the Middle Bridge on the Morden Park lake. Here the hare confirmed our suspicions of sabotage, evidenced by a faint “W” for a whip in. With more advice by Madness we found our way onwards, although Ça Va had a go with that well known turbo (Alamein), while Silent Running tried the old shoe lace trick for a quick rest, much to the amusement of Entente. Silent Running then found the way but spoiled it by stopping to let Alamein have a huge drink from the lake and the two found themselves as back markers and were heckled by Walt.

At a check at the South end of the lake Jibber and Kinky Bugger amused us by charging through the ford to cross the stream rather than use the stepping-stones. They then confused the pack by starting the rumour that BrEW had simply long jumped the stream at the weir (a distance worthy of an Olympiad) to keep his feet dry. After this the pack squelched off along the next sandy trail. Soon after we encountered a large group of young cyclists and their grown up supervisors, who looked baffled at what we were doing. We gave them some of our best On Ons. At this stage we were almost in virtual hash mode due to the lack of dust. Before long we had hurtled past a campsite, seen the blessed BH3 and arrived back at our layby car park. Madness emerged from the woods to a good round of applause from the pack, congratulations on a trail well set, in an ideal wooded area and with great economy of dust. The only serious big pinecone contenders, Birdseye and Jibber, were judged (the rest of us having chucked our feeble contenders away) with Jibber the victor. As the On Pres was heard to say, quoting the actress to the bishop, it was one of the biggest he had ever seen.

As the Silent Woman pub had decided to shut, the pack adjourned all the way to the Stour Inn at Blandford. After a couple of beers we discovered that they did not do food on a Monday - a growing problem for hungry hashers. Those still starving then walked to the New Raj for a curry and jolly good it was too. As Jibber’s jazzy red BH3 T-shirt says – run, drink and eat (for a perfect evening).
