Social Hounds/Hash Puppies:Real Hounds:THE WORDS
The Hash assembled at the King John Inn in Tollard Royal in time for a comprehensive and authoritative briefing from Warthog, who chided the late comers (Brûlée, Shady and The Wanderer). The weather was cool and overcast. Warthog explained that the Hash would be operating in part, with special permission, on private land, but sadly the Landlady was otherwise engaged in Canada and was unable to join us on this occasion. Warthog maintained that the trail was about 5 miles, but few of the old hands believed him.
After a gentle run though the village, BrEW and Silent Running set the pace on a long run to find the first of several checkbacks. BrEW, Birdseye and Entente shared the lead through the next few checks until a 180 degree turn was required at the gates of the Landlady’s Castle taking the pack up a long and steep hill, worthy of Special Forces selection. Near the top, was a whip-in where Ça Va was already mysteriously waiting. She dispensed cups of water from bottles thoughtfully cached by Warthog on the recce. The Wanderer brought up the tail of the pack, looking as if he had changed his mind about joining the hash.
Refreshed, the pack continued to the top of the hill where the Newcomers were considerately told you could have seen the Isle of Wight, if the weather was better. After a further 500 metres to another checkback (BrEW’s second), the pack turned off the ridge and down a steep escarpment, where the fun started. Alamein, using his superior weight and speed, unseated Silent Running and continued to the bottom of the slope where he was snagged by Warthog in a move worthy of a Royal Mail Travelling Post Office train. The remainder of the pack, not wishing to follow suit, slowed down and reached the bottom with more decorum, except forThe Wanderer who showed solidarity with Silent Running by finishing the leg on his derrière.
Following some more valley bottom running and another head thumping hill, the pack reached another Whip In where more water was waiting from Warthog’s magic supply. Thereafter the trail took the pack into a Nature Reserve and another specially cleared route. For reasons that were not clear, the pack became extended at this stage and Walt and The Wanderer were apparently given dodgy directions by Warthog for a short cut. After some calling and cussing, they were recovered by Warthog for a long, but gentle down hill run back to Tollard Royal. At this stage Steve Lomas was allocated his handle of Cloth Ears for his incredible capacity to ignore a whole pack of hounds in full cry …“Stop Forest (Gump)”.
The pack repaired to the King John Inn where Warthog surprised everybody by buying a round to celebrate his 60th Birthday.
