THE WORDS

From our sports correspondent “Old Gasper”
Despite the heat there were no seized up engines as we parked in the little lane by the side of the Greyhound. Madness was looking stylish in dark glasses and straw hat; others seemed apprehensive about what awaited them, remembering the length and exertions of Warthog’s Hash the week before. Ça Va disclaimed any knowledge of Entente’s intent. B>Day Glo arrived just in time for the end of the briefing; perhaps he was standing in for Birdseye.

Entente’s briefing, (delivered partly in French for the benefit of Quentin de Lambert, a brave young man just off the boat and brought along by James Vincent as an introduction to the eccentricities of the English), was reassuring. The Hash would be about 5 kilometres, with two whip-ins. There would be no fierce animals or smiley faces, but there might be a few nettles and brambles. BrEW’s possible reasons for wearing long trousers in the middle of summer became just slightly clearer.

After quick photo in front of the pub, it was back to the cars and away. We found the nettles and brambles almost at once and after the first check, with b>BrEW/b> in the lead, we were soon running past a field of horses to the next check at the Whitechurch road. Ronlet took the hounds West to the next path on the left, all knee problems forgotten as the pack stretched out behind her on the way to Bagwood Road (only a track really) for the only climb of the run. The Whip-in at the top was a welcome relief.

Ça Va and Madness guessed right and started the pack off Southwards on a long (and hot) gentle downhill stretch to one of b>Entente’s trademark “Health and Safety” whip-ins. The health part was satisfied by a cache of water, including a bowl for Brûlée, who was panting heavily by now. Safety was maintained by running along the verge until we could cross at an arrow by the road. Here we had a choice of fields, and Shady sent Brûlée to explore one possibility, rather than go himself. Whether Brûlée would have called the On is uncertain, as The Wanderer called it first, and led us off across a different field at speed. The heat doesn’t seem to affect the young and fit as much as the old and fat; I wonder why that is.

Hitting a small farm road we were cheered on by the farmer as we ran past him in his truck out onto the Anderson road. Walt’s original fears that we might be going to Anderson or even Zelston were unfounded, as we zigzagged our way across a few more roads and fields until suddenly we were back at the pub, hot, red in the face (especially BrEW, who looked like Father Christmas) and so, so pleased that it was a short one this week.
