THE WORDS
Despite the gloomy and damp conditions, a gratifyingly large pack assembled at the newly refurbished Talbot Inn at Iwerne Minster, although Ça Va was unable to attend as she was too traumatised by the World Cup final result the night before. After carefully parking his shiny new VW, BrEW spoiled the effect by conducting a drop test of his digital camera on the tarmac of the car park – which it failed, requiring him to take the hash snap with his back up video camera.
Walt assured us that the distance was a gentle 4 miles, but also casually mentioned that he had laid the trail the previous day before the heavy rain. The pack therefore set off in some trepidation as it started to rain again, with only Brûlée showing any enthusiasm for the watery conditions by diving into the stream for a quick swim whilst the pack cast around the village streets looking for definitive dabs amongst the soggy sawdust. With a few helpful prompts from Walt, the trail was followed eastwards up the side of Cranbourne Chase and across woods and fields before eventually returning to dodge the traffic on the A354 and head towards Shroton. The Wanderer managed to repeat his falling-over act from 2 weeks before on the run down to the road. The trail took the pack round the back of Shroton and into field with some Landseer-esque highland cattle with very long horns. The pack initially showed some bravado as they passed cows and calves, but this turned rapidly into group cowardice, followed by a rapid retreat and detour as the bull materialised in the distance.
Following a gentle run back into Iwerne Minster, unmolested by any other further animal life, the pack checked out the Talbot Inn. The hash handle sub-committee allocated James Vincent his handle of i-Plod in recognition of his propensity for using digital technology on the trail, and the group bade farewell to Quentin de Lambert who would be returning to France before the next meeting.
