THE WORDS

Day-Glo was there to meet us at the True Lovers Knot new car park enjoying a well deserved beer in the company of Madness, who was doing the same. Next to arrive was Jibber & Kinky Bugger who decided this was a good way to start a hash and promptly went into the bar for some of there own liquid refreshment.

A very detailed brief as to what we were to expect was delivered using a water bottle, which was full of flour to show the trail markings. Not much flour came out of the bottle, which was a sign of how the trail was to be marked.

Following the usual photo, we crossed the road for the off with BrEW finding the first dabs up hill in the direction of Blandford. At the next check, Birdseye found the On, which was across a field towards Tarrant Keyneston village, closely followed by Jibber. However, they were soon to be at the back of the pack when the trail went cold and the remainder of the pack were directed to a check on the side of the field, which Ronlet checked and eventually was successful.

Crossing an open field that would have presented an excellent view of the coast, if it had not been spoiled by the sight of rain incoming. We soon arrived at a whip-in on the side of the road. This turned into a short break whilst the pack waited for the Hare and Fiona to appear. (What had they been up to ??)

The trail continued in the direction of Blandford, Ashley Wood and eventually Ashley Wood Golf Course where we arrived at our “running water” stop, which was the drinking fountain. Another excuse for a rest, which was welcomed by Walt, who had spent most of the proceedings at the back of the pack.

After annoying some golfers, we continued through the woods, eventually reappearing on the north side with a view of Blandford Camp in the distance. At this check, the pack was spread to the three corners of the earth, BrEW & Ronlet went north, Kinky Bugger went east and Birdseye south, which proved correct, so the pack enjoyed a downhill trot for a short distance before Birdseye was presented with a smiley face and again it was into the woods. Madness took up the lead for a short while leading the pack through yet another park of Ashley Wood.

At the next check, Birdseye picked the correct trail but as had happened many times throughout the run the flour was hard to spot. Following a long downhill run we arrived at the road leading back to the pub and a check near a ford, which Jibber and Birdseye ran through, but soon, we were all to get a soaking from the rain which arrived just after skirting around Preston Farm.

We were getting wet and the The True Lovers Knot was in sight, so it was “on-home” for food and beer. A good run in enjoyable countryside. (Pity about the rain).

[On Words Footnote ~ It’s amazing what you can do with a ½ lb bag of flour]
