THE WORDS

It was agreed as our weary legs struggled over the final few furlongs, that it would be unfair to allow only the nominated Wordsters to have their say. Feelings were running high and people felt the need to get things off their chest, as it were and so to speak….

AnON-ON contributions:-

If we’d discussed it beforehand, most of the hounds would have agreed that the essence of a Warthog hash contains shouting before the start, high mileage, and a predilection for boggy ground. It being the middle of a heat wave, a substitution was needed for the latter, and so the recent innovation (see Hash 362) of virtual dust was employed in places. Inter-blob distances at crucial points were increased many fold, and by using the helpful maps provided by the hare we enjoyed one glorious section completely dust free. I offer my thanks to the hare for another challenging run through enjoyable terrain. That's what we do it for, after all.
*
We must be thankful that, there were no serving military personnel running.......this hash was precisely one hour and five minutes longer than their allowed forty five minutes! In retrospect I enjoyed the run, but would have been happier had there been another blob (as a double check) shortly after the first. A good effort by Warthog, if a little long. Also I thoroughly enjoyed the horse riders’ comments about a 'nice arse', and I did get to run for a quarter mile with a real live badger!
*
The Hare advised that no false trails would be laid and that the first blob after a check or whip-in (of which there were an inordinately high number) would be at around the 100 metre mark. Well, it was soon evident that this was one of those special Dorset 100 metres – you know the sort that if you were anywhere else in the country would be called ¼ mile! The Hare’s excuse that he’d designed this especially with Birdseye in mind was scant consolation as Birdseye had decided not to attend – had he been given a tip-off? The tactic meant that the pack had little chance of any motivational glimpse of the Hare – and after one hour out and at a particularly dustless check we resorted to the map. This buoyed us up enormously, which was just as well as local knowledge (Pete) had it, that the direction we were going in was away from Shaftesbury. A mile later and after more frantic searching had drawn a blank, Day Glo and Ronlet took the executive decision to open up the final map. Pity as BrEW was just yards from the dust (apparently). Just as well they were confident in their map reading skills, as there was no sawdust for the next stretch. Then on the outskirts of town we picked up the trail again for the final On-In, cheered on by the local Fire Crews curiously squatting on the Half Moon roundabout. We felt sure Warthog would be waiting for us with a tray of beers but strangely he ran in after the pack, revealing that he had taken a slightly different route to the one indicated on the map. Aha! Another twist.

Sitting in the pub afterwards, and after a few whinges, it transpired that everyone had actually enjoyed the run for the most part – interesting and picturesque route, badgers joining in etc. Would have just liked half a chance of catching the B*****!
