THE WORDS

One could write a dissertation about how time flies, especially the hour before a Hash is due to start. It affects all of us in different ways I am sure. Well it must do as some Hares and Hounds still manage to get to the Hash well before the scheduled starting time. For myself, there is always a little job that just needs finishing off, a slow tractor, some person admiring the countryside with not a care in the world and no consideration for anyone trying to get to the Hash on time, a phone call from someone who is not paying for it and numerous other obstacles. It was with some surprise to myself and other members of the Hash that Birdseye was not the last to arrive on this overcast, but not wet, so-called summer’s evening. Well it wasn’t cold as was clearly evident later on in the Hash when sweaty patches started to appear on various T-shirts and the odd drip of perspiration fell unnoticed into the grass at our feet. I digress, rather like running the false trails no doubt.

The usual hash picture in front of the King’s Arms sign and a short and to the point briefing from Jibber and we set off around Shaftesbury wondering at what stage we would have to climb on our hands and knees up Gold Hill. We were not to be disappointed, but more of that later. Warthog, indomitable as ever jogged off with Jibber and Kinky Bugger ensuring we did not go astray for at least the first 200 yards or so to our first check. The Abbey Gardens are nice at this time of year, no traffic being a major plus and the hounds soon spread out with Birdseye checking out the local hospital and almost finding the trail via a short cut that would have saved him a lot of running. Maybe at this point I should mention that hardwood wood shavings in small piles discreetly placed can be as hard to spot as needles in a haystack! Even harder to know where you are going when the false trails are not marked, but it does add to the entertainment for the Hounds and in this instance they were much in evidence waiting for errant runners to pick up on the correct trail once the On On had been called.

Madness was hot on the trail although only briefly before BrEW (time for a change of handle here I think unless he maintains his name on a consultancy basis) galloped off with great vigour to admire the view from Castle Hill and a steep descent towards Enmore Green with a few falsies thrown in for Birdseye and Shady to sort out before reluctantly being called back to join the pack, who were by this time cantering down grassy fields in anticipation of a long hard haul back up again. i-Plod was almost dancing to his music although as we returned via a marginally different route back to a previous check there was a slowing down in the tempo. At one stage Walt was heard to say I know it has to be up here, but he was not sure enough to go it alone, and discretion being the better part of valour he ended up with the pack, and just as well as we made a devious detour that took us around St James’s then way out towards Melbury Down (excuse the slight exaggeration) before diving down a dark and dismal track back to St. James’s and guess what? Warthog led us with Day Glo straight up Gold Hill! Luckily there were a couple of supportive passers by (tourists) who shouted encouragement just as the legs began to crumple and we all made it to the top in style (of sorts) and then it was a short on home to the King’s Arms.

Yours truly then skipped the party at the pub to get home to his loved ones whilst others enjoyed the hospitality of the King’s Arms and the company of each other until goodness knows what time. As always the time at the pub is one of the most valuable constituents of a Hash - got to replace the lost liquids and gain enough energy to stagger home (both obligatory).
