THE WORDS
So it was that the pack of 7 joined the 2 Hares at Sturminster Newton on a fine and bright evening and carefully squeezed the cars into the Bull car park. Ronlet asked for a scribe and suggested that it should be someone who had not been around for a while. As your scribe had been away for a month it was pretty obvious who she meant and so I volunteered to avoid further embarrassment! BrEW then took the team photo by the pub to the tune of Alamein howling to start – he’d obviously really missed hashing for over a month. The senior hare, Shady, gathered the pack for the brief and confessed that there were 3 virgins laying their first hash – Shady, The Wanderer and i-Plod. At the mention of the uninitiated there was a certain excited restless anticipation among the pack. Sadly i-Plod was unable to attend (On Pres decreed he was to be awarded one run for helping lay the trail). Shady then briefed on the hash signs and the trail, mentioning dabs and some whip-ins, plus a hint that there were no smiley faces. With a nod of the head we were told one dab and you’re on and we were off down the main road.
Before long the trail took the inevitable trend in the general directions of Up and Piddles Wood. We also discovered a trail with plenty of steps and a few nettles, which caught a few out early on. Warthog and Silent Running blundered at the first check and were soon well adrift of the pack who were heading across fields towards Glue Hill. BrEW was also well to the fore but was fooled into checking into a field off the trail, he then took so long to join us at the next check that some thought he’d gone home. The 2 real hounds, Dumb Blonde and Benjy, were either in attendance or doing their own thing, with Dumb Blonde taking time out for a good wash in a stream. We then had a good gallop around the roads of Broad Oak, with Jibber doing good leading, and up to the aromatic buildings of what some know as “chicken shit farm”, where Alamein appalled the pack by drinking from and rolling in a truly disgusting puddle. The pack then spent some time thrashing around in Piddles Wood, where again we thought we had lost the unlucky BrEW at one stage, due to a savage downhill false trail, who was dragged back to the pack by Shady in his rear guard role. As a hare for the first time, The Wanderer was positioning himself near the front of the pack to enjoy the confusion and indecision of the leading hounds at the checks.
The pack then hurtled downhill to the Fiddleford Inn and past the pub going North. How cruel – we could actually see them pouring pints inside! At the next check Madness and Warthog recognised the terrain and branched off left. Silent Running and Ronlet started drifting that way, but when they heard nothing drifted back to the check just in time to find they had been on the right route after all. Next we found not much dust but could follow the noise of Warthog somewhere up ahead until we ran over the River Stour at Fiddlewood Manor. We were then into open fields and, like the end of a cheap B movie Western, the galloping BH3 could be seen by the passers by to be vanishing into the setting sun led by Birdseye.
The next whip-in was at a churchyard where we could all sit on a convenient wall for a moment and get our breath back. Shady was looking relieved that the different bits of the hash laid by separate hares had in fact all joined up correctly. We then soon found ourselves on the road South out of Stur. A few hundred yards later we passed over the Town Bridge and we were soon back at the pub. The 3 Virgins got a good round of applause and our thanks for a good well thought out and interesting trail on a perfect Summer evening for running.
So after the traditional huffing and puffing, gulping of water and a quick change we repaired to the bar for a good drink from the tipple mug, while Madness and Silent Running also checked out the catering by ordering the traditionally testing dish of ham, egg and chips – and very good food it was too.
