THE WORDS
The intrepid 10 met in the car park on Affpuddle Heath, managing to avoid those large rocks at the entrance. Madness, tonight’s Hare briefed the assembled throng promptly at 1830 hrs, there were to be no checks and one blob to indicate you’re on being the main points. BrEW took the obligatory photograph using the rocks as a backdrop; by this time Ronlet had already taken her usual comfort break but had been interrupted by a rider on horseback.
The On was across the main road into Sares Wood. Warthog found the first blob, the remainder were soon on his tail. A track branched off to the right, so the Hare rested at this point and hinted in the direction, this was an insight into what was to come. The back markers took the Hare’s hint and soon came across a blob and the remainder of the pack returned to join in.
The event continued in the same vain for another 10 – 15 minutes, with the lead changing many times but was with Walt when we reached the first of four whip-in’s, where we all took a break. The re-start was a little confusing, it took a while to find the correct trail, which the Hare said had suffered sabotage by someone placing a log over the blob. Eventually, we were on with Jibber leading the pack. At the next junction, Warthog turned right, Silent Running went left and Jibber continued straight. This time, Warthog chose right and the pack was soon following.
As we were in a working forest, there were lots of felled trees and branches, which added to the enjoyment of the evening. We eventually broke-out of the forest into bright sunlight when we met Birdseye, who, by more luck than judgement, caught us up on the main track from the direction of the start point. We were then treated to some fine views of the South Dorset countryside over the former Atomic Energy Establishment and Chaldon Downs, Silent Running was leading the pack at this point.
Soon, we were heading back into the woods in an area know as Pallington Heath arriving at the road of Golden Springs Farm, where again the trail went cold for a while. Entente picked the correct trail on this occasion leading us to the second whip-in. Following a short rest, we were off again but soon to most of the packs dismay a smiley face was to appear. So, it was back over the trail and across a different part of the Heath, the Hare was looking rather smug.
We soon reached the third whip-in, where we took a well deserved rest, the weary amongst us were offered a “short cut”, BrEW, still recovering from last week’s injury refused but Walt & Ça Va took the opportunity of a level run on the track instead of an uphill track and another smiley face. We all met up again on the main road about a mile from the start point, which was the fourth whip-in.
We crossed the road onto Bryants Puddle heath away from the direction of home, the light was beginning to fail, Ronlet then produced her torch. Soon, a junction to the left appeared and we pursued this until we arrived back at the car park to the end of an enjoyable, well planned and executed run on a fine September evening, congratulations to Madness for his efforts.
We then repaired to the Drax Arms in Bere Regis for some well deserved food and drink, which was most enjoyed by all. A certain hasher enjoyed her Tanglefoot so much, she decided to share it with a fellow hasher.
Note from On Words: And she was thoughtful enough to share it as a ‘take away’.
