THE WORDS
The car park at the Rising Sun was strangely deserted at RV time. Silent Running stood alone with Alamein howling to get out of the car. Then Warthog and Kinky Bugger arrived. Jibber and Trip Hazard soon joined them. A quick role call of who was expected did not go well: Entente collecting Ça Va from the airport, Walt at a meeting, BrEW and Ronlet on hols oop North, Shady in a work meeting and The Wanderer unable to get a lift. The good news was that it had stopped raining, the bad news was that it was still very cloudy and getting gloomy. As the appointed hour arrived the hasher’s nightmare dawned “Ï’m one of only two hounds, so I’ll have to run EVERY check!” So we were 2 hares, 2 hounds and 2 real hounds. With Jibber taking a quick photo with his phone camera we were off East down the road and looking for the first check. Warthog was in the lead, which rather set the tone for the evening.
At the first check Warthog found the way, which further set the tone for the evening. Before long Warthog was 3 – 0 up over Silent Running on finding the trail from the checks. At the watercress beds there was a cunning double back through the beds themselves. Alamein enjoyed running 100m down a concrete water ditch with water up to his chest. At Ludwell Warthog admitted that he knew the area very well, so well that he had planned to lay a hash at Christmas in the area. We left Ludwell going north and from then on, dear reader, I simply have no idea where we went. Silent Running much appreciated the sympathetic hints from Jibber and Kinky Bugger: “Its not up there” and “he’s gone the right/wrong way” (referring to Warthog). So Silent Running did get to lead a few times (I should hope so too, On Pres) mixed with a few monstrous, open-ended, false trails.
Warthog knew the way so well that at one stage he took a “long cut” through a field while Silent Running, the hares and hounds thrashed around in a dank plantation/hedgerow. The dark woods and dark lanes got darker and darker. It was a good thing Trip Hazard had a flashing light on his collar, as a black dog on a black night, he was rapidly otherwise becoming invisible. By now the hares had resorted to torches – a very wise move. At one stage Silent Running was doing his blind man routine, stumbling along with hands out in front of him in the dark, only to be overtaken by a galloping Warthog, who then vanished into the gloom.
By now it was pitch black and even being on tarmac hardly helped find the way. Someone began talking like they were from that famous African tribe of pygmies, the Ferkawee, who live in very long elephant grass. Apparently they run through the long grass shouting “We’re the Ferkarwee”. Before long we emerged onto the road near the Rising Sun with a shout of “On Home” and, having been blinded by a few car headlights, we were soon back at the pub car park. The couple of hounds thanked the couple of hares for a very good trail, even if it had got a bit dark, and which definitely deserved a larger pack. The good news is that we could certainly use the area again soon. The Rising Sun does a decent pint too.
