THE WORDS

This was our third visit to the Crown at Marnhull, Silent Running’s second home. The Hounds progressively assembled for an advanced start at 18.00hrs. Birdseye on holidays, Day Glo took over the lastminute.com arrival. Alonso Warthog, caring for the track asked the Hare if he should put on sleek or all-terrain tyres. Our new Hound Patrick was given a private lesson on how a “so called normal” hash is laid and the Hare publicly welcomed him and did a short but concise brief. A couple of smiley faces, four whip-ins mainly at roads crossing and dogs on lead this time as we were expected to meet exotic animals as cattle, pheasants and other countryside dwellers. After the traditional photograph, the pack was guided to the starting line by the Hare for the On! On!.

Walt was first to pick up the trail through the Church Farm and led the pack for a twilight tour of Marnhull. A couple of checks saw Warthog, Jibber, BrEW, Entente and Shady, energetically boosted by Dumb Blonde, randomly leading the pack and sometimes struggling to find some sabotaged blobs. But it did not stop the pack enthusiasm at all. The first smiley face saw the Hounds coming back their way and taking the path just on the other side of the hedge. Then a whip in, a few yards from the Church, gave the first opportunity for a short cut that everybody rejected while looking around if someone would catch the ball on the rebound!

Back to the road, we saw Day Glo jumping a fence and catching up with the pack. The intertwined paths of this area offered several nice views of the church without getting closer at any time. Very close checks allowed the pack to stay relatively grouped. Kinky Bugger, Madness, Ronlet and Patrick joined the lead to rush off in pursuit of the Hashers’ Grail: the right path! (Not the right one, the right one. Well, English is definitely a difficult language!!). Another whip in did not offer time to rest as Warthog and Day Glo were already looking for the next adventurous path. It is fair to say that day was falling quite quickly and they were not keen to make the night of it.

At some point of the journey, a terrible incident occurred. A fence was the origin of a dog traffic jam. Dumb Blonde refused to get under a very low fence while Silent Running was asking Alamein to do so. Seeing the Lady claiming for more consideration from her human Hound, Alamein started an under fence crossing strike. “You are not crawling under!” did he say to his owner. Eventually Shady opened the gate releasing these two poor creatures from their fate.

Time was running and running so quickly than the dark joined us to spice up a bit our tour. And it became a wonderful “son et lumière” show: On! On! Flashing lights! On! On!... And you could appreciate wonders of miniaturization as Silent Running, BrEW and Ronlet were competed together to show sophisticated night vision equipment. The last whip in was called offering the last chance for a short cut that, despite the fact we were promised to a gloomy end, nobody took.

We were then in sight of the village. In an enthusiastic momentum, our Hare had laid blobs in every direction and a smiley face, but forgot the check point, and threw the pack into confusion. Setting everybody on the right path (again), he warned us of barbed w…Ouch! Too late. We reached the outskirts of Marnhull. The Hare, worried about losing his Hounds in the dark, revealed advisedly some welcome clues to get to the liberating On Home!

After the classical performing of everyone’s ablutions, we repaired for the Crown, a nice typical old farm converted into a Pub for some reviving drinks and food. Bolstered by the fact that we have not cancelled a run so far this year, even during the holiday period, On Badger stirred Hounds’ consciences to find out Hares for ending the year. Sorted out in a matter of seconds, well done Walt. To end that chapter, the Courtesy Price should have been awarded to Warthog who all along the track kindly opened gates for his fellow Hounds in order to preserve their old bones!
