THE WORDS
The intrepid 8 met in the car park of The Plough Inn, Manston for our first run of the winter season. Madness, today’s Hare briefed the assembled throng promptly at 1.115 hrs. There were to be no checks and one blob to indicate you’re on, a mixture of tarmac and grass and five whip-in’s were the main points. BrEW took the obligatory photograph.
The On was across the main road into a field, Walt found the first blob, the remainder were soon on his tail. The trail broke out into a large open field spreading the pack to the four corners, by now we had all got wet feet, which was not welcomed this early in the run. We “dog-legged” around the field and nearly returned to the pub but instead headed along the road lead by Jibber. Kinky Bugger foolishly went in the direction of the pub.
Following a short stretch on tarmac and track we again broke out into a field and the trail went cold. Eventually, Ronlet found the trail, which lead us towards West Orchard, where we enjoyed the first whip-in. After running through West Orchard we rejoined the main road heading towards Shaftsbury lead by Silent Running and Monty, but not for long. Entente discovered a footpath around the side of a very smelly chicken farm. Once more the trail broke out into open country and again went cold for a while. Jibber once again found the trail followed by the rest of the pack. We then returned to tarmac for a while and it was at this point BrEW decided to call it a day when his previous war wound proved too much to overcome. Madness handed over his map to enable his safe return to the pub.
We soon reached the second whip-in, where we took a well deserved rest, at what was about half way house. We continued on tarmac for about a mile then it was on to what looked like an old road, which proved to be very wet and muddy, just as our footwear was drying out. At a crossing point we had another rest at the third whip-in.
Soon, we were off. Ronlet, found the trail, which was a track heading towards Child Okeford, so home was still some time off. Eventually, after a long run, we reached the fourth whip-in” on the Manston/Child Okeford road. Walt had already passed this way, knowing that the dust was laid towards Manston, the pack followed his lead. Madness, once again hedged his bets. Entente took over the lead for a while but missed the footpath leaving the road towards Manston Church, which Ronlet found. We were back on to the road for a short trip to the fifth whip-in, where home was almost in sight.
Jibber went for the easy option but was again proved wrong as the trail headed towards Stur Newton. Silent Running found the concealed footpath, which took the pack once again into open country. The fog by now had lifted and a style could be seen in the distance, so we went in the general direction, while Madness lingered at the back of the pack. We soon arrived back at the car park to end an enjoyable, well planned and executed run on a now warmer November Sunday Afternoon, congratulations to Madness for his efforts. And thanks to Ça Va for the exceptionally fine cakes.
