As a developing tradition, Warthog had volunteered to lay the pre-Christmas run and Ham Hill Hashers generously supported BH3 with a good turn out, only to be bettered by a healthy band of Dorset Doddlers plus a Gillingham Trotter. Lurking, incognito, was Leveret number 2, ie. Penguin – refreshing memories of former BH3 days. To give the landlord a heads up on meal requirements, everyone seeking prandial refreshments darted into the pub to give their orders before the Off. This was followed by the landlord appearing in the car park to give his orders on how we should park. I wonder if he’s been taking lessons from the landlord of the Milton Arms! Noticing a novice or two and concerned that any serious runners may have forgotten the format and signage for a Hash, the Hare deposited a few sawdust visual aids in the car park, and even tested the BH3ers with a sign ‘deviation’ for the Check, the first of which, after the obligatory photo, could be found down by the A30. Warthog suggested that a sawdust circle was better for indicating by means of a foot scrape the direction for those bringing up the rear – a hint perhaps that the Hare did not expect people to hang around at checks… At the first circle the general feeling was that Warthog would choose the rather steep footpath leading northwards from the main road and right enough, with unwarmed muscles, we struggled up to the first of many slippery stiles, with Trip Hazard doing his thing, and from thence to a stretch on the roads, which Warthog apologised for, stating there was more tarmac than he had hoped. Nowt wrong with tarmac. Eschewing the road to Donhead St Andrew, the pack picked up the trail along the road to Donhead St Mary and we were reminded that this section of the Nadder Valley was distinguishable by its spurs and coombs – all on the rather steep side. Fortunately we could take sanctuary at the first whip-in by St Mary’s, before checking out the fork in the road. Little did we realise, until a clue was given, that we needed to check back down the fork ’andle. Entente was first on to the scent, discovering a concealed footpath between houses we had just passed. We were now off road for a while, and as the trail began to descend, the Hare got quite excited, insisting that Hash Flash BrEW get to the front as there was a looming photo opportunity. This did not bode well, and sure enough the ground became increasingly boggy with a deal of Zuts and Ooh Lalas coming from Ça Va– but at least there was a river crossing to clean off the mud. Not as deep as on Day Glo’s Advent Hash but just as cold. Rivers, being rivers, are found at the bottom of valleys and the Hare now wanted us to climb to the top of this one to enjoy a better view – very philanthropic of him, I’m sure. However, the view was worth it and he was further forgiven when he produced a bin bag of goodies. It was now Madness’ turn to be philanthropic as he helped himself to the final slices of Stollen in order to spare the Hare from carrying too much weight back. The wooded area we now entered, seemed familiar to a number of the Hashers, recalling the live lay that Warthog had designed from the Half Moon Inn way back in Summer. We were out for a couple of hours that time and it was little worrying as we closed on a patch we knew bordered the edge of Shaftesbury. At the cross roads we kept fingers crossed that the trail would head left – fortunately it did, but unfortunately it was slightly up hill and as Silent Running confided, not good with a wedge of German Christmas cake swoshing about in the stomach. But at least he had Alamein to drag him to the top. Jibber and Kinky Bugger also recognised the area as it touched on paths they had used in a recent lay but as only 2 hounds had graced their run, they felt confident they would have an advantage. Ronlet should have taken the hint and stuck with them rather than checking in the totally wrong direction around Dockham Bottom – well someone had to. Determined to get some more hills in before the end we took in a few of the old contours round Coombe before hitting the A30 and the On In. Gathering in the car park it was a surprise to see Pete Fuller towards the rear – too much triathloning or Stollen & Sangria? The latter is acceptable but the former…?
