THE WORDS

Seven intrepid hounds bravely faced the rainy weather conditions on this Sunday morning to join the Hare, Pet Rescue, at the Harley Arms in Pulham. It was the first time ever that the pack was running from that Pub. Why that mysterious new location? Some clues later on, hungry fellows! Madness, inspired by the ambient dampness was wearing one of those wonderful, colourful hat of which he’s got the secret.

Before the usual brief, Silent Running explained that he was not running today because of a back pain and will walk with Sarah and Alamein, then meet us at the Pub. That said, only five hounds were about to discover their fate, or had already got a clue looking at the Hare’s muddy legs. He was actually just back from re-laying some blobs and then gave us the brief. The trail was mostly laid on the left, many checks to satisfy the handful of hounds, three smiley faces and three whip ins, including one for the view, and finally a half way surprise. A mud bath, no you’re kidding!!

Kindly guided by the Hare, the pack left the Pub gently pushed by a strong wind. The more we were getting that way, the worse would be the way back! Led by Birdseye, we went off along the Cannings Court Lane to discover our first smiley face. Back to the last blob gave us the opportunity to admire the Old Rectory and its chapel. Entente and Birdseye took the lead towards Furze Hill and through Hartmoor Farm’s fields. While Birdseye was checking the path, Ça Va, Entente, Madness and Day Glo were checking the field. A little bit confused, Birdseye turned back spreading confusion to the rest of the pack facing false trails. Then the blessed release of the Hare’s voice brought the pack in the right way. Nonchalantly, Ça Va, Entente, Madness and Day Glo didn’t give a fig for the crosses and joined the Hare by the first stile, while Birdseye was conscientiously backtracking towards his first thoughts!

Passing along Hartmoor Farm, the pack was then rewarded by a lovely sun which would follow them all the way round. Another smiley face brought the pack back to their beloved muddy and wet fields. A very long leg in more wet fields led us, less Birdseye who was miles away upfront, to a six-pointed star check. Coming from one way, it gave work for everyone and time to the Hare to use his first lifeline and call a friend (his wife, actually!). Madness found the right path which led us to Harbin’s Farm. Here was the surprise and the clue about that location. Day Glo was telling Entente that we were running in Pet Rescue’s back garden! And suddenly we saw Wendy Stibbards who was very kindly waiting for us with beers, coffee and biscuits. The B reak has Been the opportunity of dealing with Beeees!!! Beer, Butter, Bread, Bacon and that’s not the half of it!! To preserve her health, Ça Va decided to use the shortcut here, leaving four miserable hounds and one Hare to their fate. And the worst was about to come!

After a reviving break, the pack went off towards Hamper’s Farm. The last smiley face brought the hounds back to a path which was heading straight up towards Sandhills Coppice. Birdseye took the lead and with a little help from the wind everybody reached the summit to discover an outstanding 360° view over the Blackmore Vale, Bulbarrow Hill, Hambledon Hill and Shaftesbury. Led by Birdseye and Day Glo, the pack rushed away down the hill to Newlands Farm, it’s more appropriate here to say: the pack was mud skating to Newlands Farm! While Madness, Day Glo and Birdseye were checking the main paths, Entente was intrigued by a very narrow passageway which revealed to be the way back to West Pulham and then On Home to the Pub.

A round of applause rewarded the Hare for his effort. We thanked him as well for having taken care of our skin and after the usual ablutions on this tiny car park, we reconvened at the Pub to meet Silent Running, Sarah, Wendy, Tour Guide, The Slobby Uno ♀ and a friend. Here Madness eventually put an end to the Beeees’ discussion by appropriately saying that in French mud is spelled “Boue”!! Chapeau bas! Mister Madness!
