THE WORDS
The intrepid 10 met in the car park of The Royal Oak, Motcombe for the penultimate run of the winter season. Jibber, today’s “Hare in charge” briefed the assembled throng promptly at 11.15hrs giving warnings of sheep, lambs and railway lines. Kinky Bugger the other Hare introduced Chantelle his sister and Silent Running introduced Steve, both virgin hashers. In the continuing absence of BrEW (flying in Portugal, what sort of an excuse is that) ÇaVa took the obligatory photograph.
The On was along the main road towards the village, ÇaVa found the first check and unknowingly ventured on the first false trail of the day. The trail broke left around the outskirts of the village with Entente leading the pack. At the next check, keeping it in the family Entente took the wrong trail leaving it to Silent Running to find the correct trail along Frog Lane but not for long. At the next check, Silent Running continued but the remainder of the pack led by Ronlet headed into the fields with the lambs and sheep we had been warned about. We were gradually climbing uphill in the direction of Kingsettle Wood, with Patrick taking over the running. Meanwhile at the back of the pack, Kinky Bugger was keeping an eye on Chantelle.
We reached Kingsettle Farmhouse almost resting for a game of tennis. Ronlet continued uphill, which proved wrong. The rest of the pack “dog-legged” right down hill with Silent Running and Alamein enjoying the mud, Walt and Steve following, but it was too early to head home. It was back through the mud and uphill once more towards Shaftesbury, which was in the distance. At last we reached the first whip-in for a well deserved rest and a chance to enjoy a lovely view across the Blackmore Vale.
Soon, we were off, Patrick finding the trail, which was heading towards Kingsettle Woods and in the direction of Kingsettle Farm. We all enjoyed a trip through the woods albeit at a fairly quick pace, because it was down hill. We then continued down hill towards North Hayes Farm and on under the railway eventually reaching the second whip-in at Hugglers Hole at just over the half way point - Walt, Chantelle, Kinky Bugger and Steve were bringing up the rear.
ÇaVa once again chose the false trail from the on; Ronlet was correct this time. Entente then took up the lead on the first sight of tarmac for a long while. Jibber took up his usual position at the rear of the pack. It wasn’t long before we reached a T-Junction and a road sign pointing towards home. Silent Running and Alamein foolishly chose to go the opposite direction so Entente headed towards Motcombe and was soon proved right.
The next part of the run was a Hash First, crossing the main Exeter to London railway line, not exactly the TGV but close. Entente was at the front at this point closely followed by Walt. Negotiating the downward slope off the railway proved difficult for some of the hounds.
Crossing a few more fields the village was in sight and we soon arrived back at the car park to end an enjoyable, well planned and executed run on a mild March Sunday Afternoon, congratulations to Jibber & Kinky Bugger for their efforts.
Note from On Words: We mistakenly thought that Walt had hit his hundred, but it was just a flaky 99-er. Get ready for 2 April. On the other hand Ronlet sneaked in at 150 – and she doesn’t look a day older….
