THE WORDS

An unlucky 13 hounds & one real hound arrived at the pub and were instructed by Walt to gather around at the local village hall, where the briefing would be given. The ‘friendly’ landlord obviously didn’t want us to clutter up his car park. Most hashers were a bit overwhelmed when Nikki ran in, having just completed a warm-up from Stickland. We expect this kind of lunacy from Day Glo, but Nikki seemed so sensible. Before leaving for the briefing, BrEW, returning after a 7 week absence in Portugal, took the Hash photo. As the hashers were all experienced, the briefing was left short, with a warning that people ‘would’ be coming back with wet shoes.

A “Checking!” from the hare was issued and the hashers spread out with the On called by Silent Running up a very steep, long hill. The group was then joined by a potential ‘wannabe’ hasher who, clearly impressed by the proceedings, left the pack at the top of the hill as a whip-in was called. The next check led the group towards the woods. Once inside the woods various checks & trails were investigated by the hounds, Madness creating his own shorts cuts. The pack emerged with Ronlet in the lead, down a long stone track through the other side. Warthog raced off from the next check calling ‘on on on’ & everyone followed. Unfortunately this led to a ‘smiley face’, so it was back to the last blob where the trail was found to be one that was previously checked up a very steep track. A whip-in was called at the top for the hounds to recover. It was then down the other side of the hill to a lane, where another check was found. The track appeared to be over a fence & into a field, where the river was discovered by Warthog. The rest of the pack followed trying to keep their shoes as dry as possible. Out of the field the trail was down a long track towards the road led by Entente.

It was at about this time that an injury BrEW had picked up in Portugal decided to handicap his progress again and together with Ronlet they tried to work out a short cut back, which was difficult as the hashers were then led into a maze of more woods, eventually emerging on to the main road at the top of the village. The On-In was called down to the pub. By now the tail-enders were just hitting the edge of the village, in time to see Nikki embarking on her warm-down run back to Stickland. Good Grief!

A very good route had been laid, with a surprising number of hills – well that’s the polite way to put it. The pack re-grouped at the pub just upon the hour.
