THE WORDS
The car park at the Fiddleford Inn was filling up nicely but sadly not to the amusement of the landlord! This resulted in a shuttle trip to repark some cars at nearby Fiddleford Mill, although our host, Shady, promised that this would work out well. It was particularly good to see Two Shoes again after a long absence due to injury. Once we were all back at the car park we had a brief by our hare “5 miles main trail, some whip ins and no smilie faces, The Wanderer had helped lay the trail but was not able to run” and who then intrigued us by a final comment of “see if you can spot what we are paying Dorset Council for”. Those present agreed this was a hint about the new footbridge over the Stour. ’On Pres asked who had the camera but was greeted by a sea of blank looks and to avoid loss of face had to volunteer for the words. Right, straight into the run then.
The pack surged off North led, not for the first time, by Warthog. Madness lived up to his name and completely wandered off the trail at one stage. Although he kept it quiet Warthog had glimpsed the “BH3” and knew that we would return this way. After about a mile and some good checks we ran past Fiddleford Mill. We soon ended up back on the A357, at a whip-in, only a few hundred yards from the start. More experienced hounds now knew what to expect and the whole pack moved right and then first left uphill into Piddles Wood. Here the conversation died away to be replaced by some serious huffing and puffing while we dealt with the steep hill. By the time we got to the top of the hill those who had feared the evening chill and had worn jackets, like Two Shoes and Nicky, were having second thoughts. We then had some excellent tricky checks in the wood and emerged in the area of Broad Oak. During our passage through a field of cows hidden depths were shown by both Graham (needs hash handle) and Silent Running as they had to have serious words with the cows who were trying to join in by running with us. Key words used were “Gwaanbuggerroff” and “Yaaaaggghhhh” – Dr Doolittle eat your heart out! To break the tension Entente asked Madness if he rode as there was a horse in with the cows – the reply is unprintable.
The pack then emerged near Glue Hill where a whip-in had been dug up by the local gas company due to a leak. After the inevitable “anybody got a cigarette” jokes we ran downhill, where Shady explained that the road widening and associated embankment works had cost the Council a king’s ransom. We then crossed the A357 again and made our way to the Mill on the river. Here Madness caused confusion by helpfully advising Silent Running that he must be “on” – and then failed to keep a straight face when proved wrong a few hundred yards later. Dumb Blonde was helpful by taking a swim and then shaking water all over the rest of us. Alamein tried to drink the whole River Stour he was so thirsty. After an impromptu whip-in we then ran through part of Sturminster Newton and emerged onto the old railway line. The pack then circled round to cross the new footbridge over the river where the leading group of Madness, Nikki, Jibber and Kinky Bugger vanished over the horizon to lots of comments about “Four go exploring Dorset” and “Extra Miles”. Shady directed the rest of the pack back to the pub via the ’On In. Some could collect their cars as they passed the Fiddleford Mill car park – especially Walt, who looked relieved to do so.
Back at the pub car park it soon became evident that the leading group were still missing. They eventually turned up about 10 minutes later having got carried away, missing the final turn and having run “nearly as far as Hammoon”. In the pub Shady’s route was much admired for its variety and intriguing loops – as well as the new footbridge as promised some weeks earlier. Pints of Spitfire and Ham, Egg and Chips also went down pretty well. So much so that ’On Pres agreed that The Wanderer can be credited one run for helping lay the trail.
