THE WORDS
Silent Running was displaying commendably green credentials as we gathered to recycle the hashing potential of Marnhull for the third time in some 18 months. We also welcomed Paul – who was introduced by Graham and was intending to use the hash as part of his personal beat-up for his forthcoming commando training. It did not take long to see evidence of his dedication to this goal. Patrick was also a welcome returner, joining his first hash of the current season after a prolonged winter hibernation. Although somewhat low on numbers Silent Running started his briefing promptly for an 18.30 H Hour: Just over 4 miles, one hour’s running, one smiley face, all trails marked correctly – just the precision and attention to detail you would expect. The precise time schedule and sense of good order and discipline was dented slightly, but the numbers swelled, by the late arrival of Warthog, Jibber and Kinky Bugger after the briefing had finished at H Hour - 20 seconds. After a quick photo, we were one dab and you’re on, through the quiet cul-de-sacs of Marnhull.
The trail led us through a web of roads, alleys and paths onto the North side of the village with several checks to keep the hounds alert and to enable Paul to demonstrate his commendable keenness and an alarming propensity for selecting the false trail. The right trail led the pack out of town on a lane, and with the usual suspects – Warthog, Entente and Kinky Bugger - leading the field, we circumnavigated the North side of the village – claimed to be the largest in England. After a while a pattern emerged consisting of running out of town on a lane, followed by a cut back on foot paths and fields to the next lane which we then followed out of town again. Silent Running tested us with muddy fields, stinking farmyards and some tricky checks and a smiley face which took us off the lane onto the Cricket Ground for a short detour along the boundary before returning to the same lane. Amongst the running and checking, Patrick, showing an absence of the Frontier Spirit that you might expect from some one of his nationality and profession, explained that the reason for his absence over the winter was that he only ran when weather conditions were perfect and that we should only plan on intermittent attendance in future given the vagaries of the English climate. At a subsequent and complex five way check, Warthog - with rather more Frontier Spirit -felt the need to chide the hounds for their lack of enthusiasm and to remind them that this was ‘supposed to be a run’.
Spurred on by this barb, the pack tackled the last section of the trail, following a complex pattern of dabs through fields and hedgerows on the North West quarter of the village. Paul continued to doggedly follow up every false trail, often ignoring the body language of the hare and the rest of the pack. Cruelly during this section, the trail took the pack past the ‘other’ pub in Marnhull which the cognoscenti confirmed was at least a mile from our destination. It was also at this stage that BrEW, making a welcome return to the field after injury, got separated from the remainder of the hounds and - as befitting his flying instructor status – received a Ground Controlled Approach talk-down back onto the trail from the other side of the hedge from Silent Running.
The last 20 minutes saw the pack pounding over a pair of muddy fields and connecting lanes and footpaths and, with leaden feet carrying several extra kilos of top soil on running shoes, we puffed back up the hill to the Crown car park, arriving less than one minute under the hour promised by Silent Running- now that’s what we call precision.
Following appropriate ablutions, the pack - less Dumb Blonde who was tied up outside and looked pathetically through the window – repaired into the bar for refreshment, debriefing and a fascinating analysis of the recent French Presidential election by Entente. Dorset Village and Countryside, Stimulating Exercise and Company, Beer, and International Relations and Politics. What more could you want on a May evening?
