THE WORDS
The hashers gathered outside the Horseshoe Inn at Ebbesbourne Wake, a picturesque village just over the border into Wiltshire. The inn car park looked a little cramped so most had elected to park along the road, but by the time Ronlet and BrEW arrived it was in fact the only place to park. Birdseye gave the briefing ~ about 5 miles, not sure the number of smiley etc., one blob and your On.
Warthog found the correct trail around the church up into a small car park only to be told that we were too noisy for the country side! On to the first check, where Strider followed the blobs around the field to the end of the village known as the West End – you’ll never guess why. At the check Strider chose the wrong way and Kinky Bugger picked up the trail along the road to Brooklands Farm where again Strider found the trail only to discover the first smiley at the top of the hill. Fortunately, some of us, not being so fleet of foot, avoided the consequences of this diversion. So it was back down a few hundred yards to find the trail. At the next check Warthog went the wrong way and Strider found the trail through the brambles and the sting nettles - whereas Jibber sensibly jumped over the fence to miss this delight.
The pack then charged down through some fields past a check down to the second smiley, and inevitably back up to the check to find the trail through the corn field and then via some more fields down into a valley. Here the On On was confidently called only to find the third smiley which turned us back the way we had come, following the trail up through Church Bottom, a long re-entrant, to a water trough and the next check. Jibber seemed to have the right way only to lose it to Kinky Bugger who led us steeply up to the next check, with some of us needing 3 points of contact to negotiate the incline. Jibber was on a ‘wrong’ roll now and Warthog picked up the scent again through the corn field to the next check. Warthog and Kinky Bugger elected to go down each side of the hedgerow. One of them had to be false and it turned out to be Kinky Bugger’s. Building up a head of steam Warthog trailed us around the field and back through the hedge down through another field where he had a senior moment and missed the check completely. Strider made the effort to check only for Warthog to discover he was still on the right trail. We continued down (which showed how much ‘up’ we’d had to do) and through the hedge and down to the check on the road. A simple choice, right or left to the pub? The right had it but we soon came to a fork in the road with another left/right decision. The left had greater appeal as it did not head uphill and the less cynical who chose this were fortunately correct and soon found the On In, with Warthog taking a short cut through a field, while the rest followed the road around and back to the pub for refreshments.
We had been warned that there would be no food, but to show his hospitality the landlord offered Ronlet the opportunity to freshen up and change in an outbuilding – which proved to be a small home gym with a floor muddier than she’d encountered en route! It’s the thought that counts. And many thoughts were focused on food so that after a couple of pints, the pack split for various destinations – home/other pub or the Simla Tandoori in Blandford for a very necessary fuel stop.
