THE WORDS
The intrepid 11 met in the car park of the church at Stourpaine to alleviate parking at the pub.
Strider, tonight’s “live” hare and Silent Running, briefed the assembled ‘throng’ promptly at 1830, one blob and you’re on was the main point. Silent Running promised a beer to anyone who could catch Strider. BrEW took the obligatory photograph, with the Church in the background.
The On was across a field towards the main road. However, this soon proved to be a falsie, the pack returned to the church to start again. This time the On was through the village. By now Strider had built up a good lead, but it meant that now we could be joined by reinforcements in the shape of latecomers (what a surprise!) Birdseye and The Slobby Uno ♂.
The trail followed a stream for a while heading towards the outskirts of the village. With Hod Hill in the distance we arrived at a check. The Slobby Uno ♂ went some 100 yards before been called back as Ronlet led the pack upwards towards Hod Hill.
By the time we reached the entrance to Hod Hill, Hidden Depths & Walt were firmly entrenched at the back of the pack. At this check, the pack was scattered far and wide. The Slobby Uno ♂ once again chose the wrong trail only to be called back again. We had now reached the top of Hod Hill and if the weather had been better we would have enjoyed a fine view of the Dorset countryside.
Birdseye instead of The Slobby Uno ♂ was in the lead at this point. At the next check Jibber took the lead in the direction of the Shillingstone side of the hill. We then headed down the side of the hill towards Handford, with Kinky Bugger slipping and sliding in his wake. We reached a check on the road to Child Okeford. BrEW disappeared into
the woods, checking was his excuse. Ronlet lead us to the next check, which was at the junction of the A350.
The Slobby Uno ♂ for the first time picked the right trail, which was heading upwards in the direction of Hambledon Hill, Walt & Hidden Depths were still enjoying the views from the rear of the pack with the rain starting to fall heavily. We then reached a barn where we took the opportunity for a whip-in and a well deserved rest.
Having regained our breath, we were soon off with Madness &BrEW going towards the top of Hambledon Hill. Fortunately for the remainder, the trail, discovered by Ronlet, was downhill, with Hod Hill looming. (Not again, we thought.). But, yes we were again going up Hod Hill to enjoy the views and stampede the cattle.
Stourpaine was now in sight but still a couple of miles away. If we were to catch Strider this would be our chance. Our return leg took us across a couple of fields, down a lane and through the village. We all managed to get wetter and dirtier than on this wordster’s own run back in March.
An enjoyable, well planned and executed run on a very wet, July Monday evening and congratulations to Strider for his efforts. We then repaired to the White Horse for a well deserved drink. Food was not available so most decided a curry in Blandford was a good idea.
