THE WORDS
10 Hashers and 1 Hare gathered outside of the Cricketers in Shroton, on what seemed to be a typical summer’s evening!! Madness gave the briefing, mostly for the benefit of the new hasher Ben King. We were told to expect a course of 5 miles, mostly flat, cows & some hilly bits. With the traditional photo by BrEW, we were then told one blob and you’re On.
The pack split 3 ways and Kinky Bugger was first to spot a blob on the left (when facing the pub) and the On On was quickly called taking us around the back of the pub, with Hambledon Hill looming, along a footpath and back down into the village. At the crossroads we paused to check – longer than usual as the front runner was so far away, we didn’t hear the On – it was new hasher, Ben, taking the lead and the pack had to put a bit of a spurt on to catch him up in the first field of the trail.
When the pack reached the second field, Ben seemed to have checked most routes but the Hare still had to steer us in the right direction. Silent Running led the pack up a very muddy wet track where all shoes become waterlogged only to find the first smiley face - so back we come, apart from the smug looking Walt and Ronlet who had not ventured that far, having spotted the Hare hanging back.
We now headed out of the fields and to the next check, set in a lane, from where BrEW took the pack up the lane to the next check at Park Farm. Shady then led us into the next set of fields and On to our first whip in. At this point we had been circling Hambledon Hill for a good mile and suspected this was part of Madness’s “Master Plan”. The next check led us gradually to the base of the hill where Ronlet took charge and it was Up to the next check. The trail was quickly picked up again by Silent Running and Kinky Bugger who sounded a lot of unhappy, gasping On On Ons up ahead. Two Shoes had a near miss with a cow pat – could have gone his length, much to Ronlet’s amusement! This was not to last long, as she began to suffer on the steep inclines. A good amount of sneaky saw dust laying led the pack to the very summit of the hill, keeping everyone guessing. It was a well deserved whip in to admire the view, catch our breath and allow time for BrEW to administer a little therapeutic massage to Ronlet’s calf muscles.
As the pack took off again we circled around the top of the hill, with Sloe, Jibber and Kinky Bugger keen to head us down towards sea level again. And talking about keen, two more shadowy figures trotted into view, cresting the hill. It turned out to be Birdseye and the Slobby Uno ♂, who had amazingly managed to follow the trail, even picking up the earlier Smiley Face – bad luck!
Jibber and Kinky Bugger then led the pack across the top of the hill and found the second smiley – even worse luck. The On was called up to the next whip in, and Birdseye and the Slobby Uno ♂, fed up of playing catch up, decided it was time to lead the pack and raced off down a well recognised stony track where it was BH3 ON IN to the pub. Congratulations were given to Madness for a very well laid hash despite the hilly bits with all hashers returning to the pub in approx 68 mins.
