Hares, Hounds and Hash Stats
THE WORDS
The pack gathered in the public car park at the Martin Down Nature Reserve, just off the A354 and just on the Hampshire side of the county boundary. Well most did. Silent Running had to drive and collect Madness from waiting in his car in splendid isolation in another car park 400m away. The sad part of this occasion was that this was to be the last run for Entente before his return to Paris – Warthog turned up in a smart little black frock to mark the occasion. The pack was keen to welcome Pierre as a new member of the Hash and to see Peter Fuller (needs hash handle) again who we had not seen for a while.
'On Pres congratulated Jibber on his 100th run last time out – sadly Jibber was absent, off sick with “a bad back” (saw the weather forecast we reckon). Walt confessed that he had already had one good soaking whilst laying the trail and had been forced to return home for dry clothes. The hare gave us a good demonstration of the trail markings for the benefit of Pierre. He then gave us the brief of 1 dab and you’re on, one smiley face, 3 whip-ins and expect some hills, some mud and to get very wet. A quick photo and we were off into a good drizzle.
The trail led roughly South-East and we damply headed off over Martin Down led by Strider. Someone remarked that if Madness fell during the run it would make a good line in the words. First to fall was in fact Silent Running at the back of the pack, who slipped at the edge of a large puddle and took a real pearler. He hoped that no one had noticed but the mud from head to foot via his back was a bit of a give-away. The French Connection were running well and, tutored by Entente, Pierre was quick to pick up investigating the false trails. After the first whip-in we set off again and almost immediately Ronlet took a bad tumble to land knees first on a solid chalk path – ouch! It was no compensation for her that Madness had advised her “careful you don’t fall” a moment earlier.
Strider, Birdseye and Warthog were featuring largely at the front but it was Strider and Birdseye who were first to the smiley face. The pack then embarked on a long flog uphill in a narrow, overgrown muddy path which gave no chance for overtaking. We then ran along a narrow path through a cornfield where our legs got a good “sandpapering”. After another cunning check the pack spread out on another stiff climb this time up Pentridge Down, led by Warthog and Peter, and eventually to a whip-in at the trig point on Penbury Knoll. After admiring the view and getting our breath back we descended through a very overgrown path which had us all bobbing and ducking to try and miss the various brambles and nettles strung across the path, some at head height. In the village of Pentridge the rear markers, including BrEW, noticed that our hare was hanging back after his efforts laying the trail. We then had a good long gallop to the next check and then dived into another corn field where BrEW twisted his ankle, fell heavily but gamely hobbled on. Soon after we negotiated a very muddy Bokerly Ditch which had a few more slipping, sliding and stumbling, including Kinky Bugger, much to the entertainment of Madness who was already safely across.
Led by Peter we then reached the Southern end of the old ranges and the pack lost the trail. Lots of shouting of “looking”. Lots of hedging of bets as the run in must be imminent. Slowly the pack spread out with a trend to stick to the high ground to keep in touch with the other hounds. Pierre here was doing sterling work trying to sniff out the correct path. Some admired the cunning trail which could cause such confusion amongst such a skilled pack. This trail had us beaten, we were defeated, run into submission. As the hare arrived carrying two bags of dust he admitted that he had left too much dust behind when setting the trail and by this stage HAD RUN OUT OF DUST! With a quick hint Walt had us charging down the range path for the unmarked “On In” back to the car park.
Not surprisingly the walking wounded, BrEW and Ronlet, were last in – apart from our noble hare. Walt got a very good round of applause for setting a really good trail in difficult conditions. After a bit of wriggling around in the cars to get changed, as it was still raining, we adjourned to the Inn on the Chase at Cashmore for their steak night. We were joined by Pierre’s wife and daughter. We then discussed the 3 falls and a submission, the various injuries, who could make Entente’s farewell meal and how we really wanted our steaks cooked. Thank goodness, Warthog had at last taken that black dress off – I mean, isn’t it obvious that it just doesn’t go with that pink handbag!
