Hares, Hounds and Hash Stats

THE WORDS

13 eager hounds gathered at the Royal Oak Swallowcliffe to be met by our hares Ronlet and BrEW; after making some last minute preps due to some sabotage of the trail. We thoroughly expected a high calibre trail to have been set, but doubts began to creep in when Ronlet cast aspersions on BrEW’s map reading skills and his ability to identify which direction was North.

The briefing was comprehensive stating the distance was about 5 miles and would take about 1 hour. The start was a check, and that blobs had been strategically placed on the left, right or in the middle. False trails were marked, 2 smiley faces promised and 2 Whip Ins. Hidden Depths is still looking for the second Whip In. BrEW as ever took a most professional photograph; it looked to be from all angles.

We needed to crack on with the hash as the smell emanating from just outside the pub left a lot to be desired, with Silent Running adamant that the smell was not him. We soon found blobs and were off, with false trails being checked by the very enthusiastic hounds, Strider, Kinky Bugger, Madness and Crazy Fool. The initial part of the Hash took us on a circular route around the village, very pleasant ~things were to get worse.

We then proceeded up to Swallowcliffe Wood with BrEW dropping off at the back “for a toilet break”, what a devious chap, as by the time we got down to the meadow, BrEW was nowhere to be seen. We doubled back on ourselves across the meadow with hearty shouts of “On On” to end up at a check. Silent Running and Birdseye both checked out the uphill track only to come back down to seek clarification on a marking. Ronlet informed them it must be a blob and to re-check, they redoubled their efforts striding purposefully back up the trail only to find a check back marker further on. Well done anyway, it gave the rest of us a breather. We then found that the trail had doubled back on ourselves and off we went.

The next part of the trail took us up to what we thought was Ronlet and BrEW’s summer residence, beautiful house, lake and even the entrance lodge looked very grand. Up we went through the wood to a Whip In and at this point I noticed that Muddy had introduced Fartleking to the Hash (sprint and walk). [He also gained my attention later, when Ronlet was describing a stile as having seen better days; Muddy remarked so had the person getting over the stile (Hidden Depths)].

On we went, on through the wood, with many branches and rickety bridges upon one of which Strider nearly came undone, however with his usual grace he merely leapt over it and on he went.

The next challenging part was the only muddy bit on the trail and true to Warthog’s handle over the stile he went, feet first up to his ankles, ably followed on by the rest of the pack. A few stragglers waited and watched Ronlet disappear to the side of the fence to a nice dry part, she gracefully held up the barbed wire fence for us to navigate and on we went.

That was the hour gone, 5 miles, I don’t think so, back to the road, on to the village, spirits were beginning to rise at the next check, we could almost smell the pub, literally. However, a touch of live trail laying by Ronlet led us off the road and over the fields again. Bumpy terrain, legs sapped but still the enthusiastic cries of “On On” could be heard, and there it was the BH3 sign and we were back. Warthog, being the inventive chap that he is, proceeded to use the stream as his bathing area before proceeding to the pub ~ what a gent.

Thank you to Ronlet and BrEW for laying a great trail in challenging circumstances, having been chased by quad biking landowners and sabotage to their markings. The pub was lovely inside, however, we could only afford to drink beer; the wine list started at £15 per bottle and went into the hundreds for the vintage stuff.
