THE WORDS
The intrepid 10 met in the car park of The Milton Arms at Winterborne Whitechurch and then moved to the village hall to alleviate parking. A fellow Hasher who was on holiday in the area and enjoying a beer at the pub joined us for a chat and wished us well.
Madness, tonight’s hare briefed the assembled throng promptly at 1830hrs, one blob and you’re on were the main points, BrEW took the obligatory photograph.
As there were 8 or 9 different possible directions, the pack was spread far and wide. Walt chose the correct trail (he had spotted the hare earlier checking the trail) closely followed by Hidden Depths. The On was across the main road onto uncharted ground for all of us. At the next check Walt once again chose the correct trail, which was through a field with lots of grazing cows, their spoils were very evident, a lot of dodging and jumping was required to keep the shoes clean. Jibber & Kinky Bugger eventually caught and passed Walt and led the pack to the next check, cunningly hidden in a dried up river bed at West Farm.
Silent Running picked the correct trail this time which led us along a road heading back towards Winterborne Whitechurch, leading us to the next check. He then continued along the road but was not successful this time. Instead, Jibber ventured into a field containing Maize, which “was as high as an elephant’s eye” so the hare had informed us at the start.
From the next check, Emptier & Xtra Miles continued ahead but were soon to find a cross. Kinky Bugger went south along a hedge line but soon returned, then Jibber found the trail along the hedge line heading west through a freshly tilled field, the remainder soon followed and assembled at the next check at a group of farm building.
Silent Running again picked the wrong trail, Jibber was lucky this time. After a short distance Emptier found the one and only smiley face much to his disgust. We were approaching the half way point with Bere Regis in the distance.
At the next check Jibber not knowing where he was checked back towards a trail which was false from a previous check. Ronlet & Emptier picked the correct trail through a gate into another field heading towards Milborne St Andrew.
Following a stretch along a track we reached a well deserved check at the front of a house, Walt & Hidden Depths were bringing up the rear. Silent Running checked the trail through the back garden and was nearly decapitated by the washing line. Ronlet chose the correct trail this time which led us to a whip-in next to a gas plant on the A354.
Having regained our breath, we were soon off across the road looking for the dust. Emptier went for the obvious in the direction of the indicated footpath, which proved wrong. BrEW decided to check down hill (he should know by now “never check down hill”). Once again Jibber picked the correct trail heading north-east adjacent to the A354. Walt, almost on home territory, took a short cut across the field heading towards the Milton Abbas road and home.
However, at the next check on said road, Silent Running took the obvious trail towards home, which sadistically proved wrong. Madness decided to prolong the agony for a little longer and took us on a long loop, entering the village next to the village hall where the cars were parked. (Why didn’t I move my car there ?)
An enjoyable well planned run on a warm September Monday evening. Congratulations to Madness for his efforts and for stepping into the breach at short notice. We then repaired to the Milton Arms for some well deserved drinks & food. Later, Madness treated us to some of his best jokes.
