THE WORDS

We all arrived at Woolland Hill overlooking the gorgeous Blackmore Vale. There were ominous black clouds in the distance; rain was threatening. While waiting for the briefing we were inspected by the local constabulary. She had some connection to the Ham Hill Hash.

The briefing followed, presented by Silent Running. The route would be about 4 miles and take about an hour. There would be two whip ins and one smiley face. There were the optional short cuts. We were going to be in a nature reserve, so please be careful of plants and animals. Someone suggested we might be heading for Longleat. The advance email had warned of stingers and brambles so wear long tracksters. Silent Running also warned us of ticks aplenty. All except Walt took the advice, he ended up with nettle rash, scratches and an unknown number of ticks.

Who was going to do the words? Everyone seemed to be shuffling their feet and looking at the ground. BrEW decided we should consult Ronlet. He phoned Ronlet and the rest is history.

The photo and first dab and you are on. Pet Rescue was soon off in the right direction. Both Pet Rescue and Shady were leading as we made a circular tour of the masts of Bullbarrow via road. Then it got more interesting as we headed into the woods.

Soon after we had our first incident. Madness needed a “pony”. Apparently he vanished into the woods with two large dock leaves, neatly cut in half and soon after emerged feeling a lot more comfortable. No need to go into too much detail here but I am sure Madness will recall this for the next few weeks.

On On to the next check. Minor confusion after checking all the possible footpaths we had to look a little harder and found the trail running down the side of the field. The next check was by the fence and a convenient cattle/sheep pen frame was lying on its side providing a ladder by which one could reach the top of the fence. A convenient stake was available on the other side of the fence to allow nimble people the ability to support themselves over the fence. Madness was the first to try this. Not the most nimble of people he decided he could not make it this way. The next person tried and the stake broke. After a number of different attempts we all made it into the woods.

For the next few checks I seemed to be blessed with the ability to seek out the correct path. We meandered up and down (mostly down) into Delcombe Woods. Approaching a check at the bottom, I mentioned to Pet Rescue that my luck must run out soon. At the next check I found the correct path and headed off down the valley. I soon had my suspicions, lack of sawdust, and then heard cries from behind. I had run past a well-concealed smiley face hidden behind a tree on the right. There were a number who had blindly followed! We returned to the last dab and then started the climb back up out of the woods. Cries of “I am sure we are going up further than we came down” were heard across the valley.

When we returned to the car park, we noticed two additional cars. A Shaftsbury car and A.N. Other’s. We continued changing and making moves to adjourn to the pub when two lonely figures appeared out of the gloom. Birdseye and Kinky Bugger had started at 18:30 (not read the email or just late) and had seen and heard us but gamely followed the trail.

We rendezvoused at the Fox in Lower Antsy and had a few pints and food. Madness paid his dues with a handful of change 50ps, 20ps, 10ps, 5ps, 2ps, 1ps. ’On Cash took it well. I presented a £10 note and guess what – I got a pocket full of change! Must remember to bring the correct money next time.
