THE WORDS

A smaller pack than usual, possibly explained by the arrival of some Autumnal weather, met in the car park of the Ship Inn at West Stour, off the A30 West of Shaftesbury, for a hash laid by Jibber and Kinky Bugger. After a quick briefing and the traditional photo by the pub taken by Hidden Depths (thank you for heeding the plea to bring a camera!), it was one and on.

Under direction, everyone stayed south of the road and plunged into the fields, but it was Silent Running who found the trail and led the way over a ditch and onto the first check. After a fair amount of dithering around a wooden footbridge, the On was called past some confused cows and the pack set off in pursuit of Emptier, trying to avoid twists and sprains over the hoof trodden ground. Through a gate and into a surreptitious, winding path through the six foot maize of the next field, where Madness was poked in the eye by a particularly vicious plant and Silent Running and Jibber managed to stumble through the only nettles in the whole field. South again at the top of the field and the pack charged into Stour Provost, then a brief call of “Looking!” before forking left into a small field. Over one stile, back on ourselves across a small bridge and a short gallop before the pack reached the first whip-in.

A pause for breath, and then we were off again up a small climb and into Fifehead Magdalen, where the pack became somewhat strung out, so strung out, in fact, that Madness thought he was leading the pack when he was actually second by some distance. Imagine his confusion when he heard “On! On!” called way in front of him! South again out of the village and a nice long downhill before a seemingly redundant check ~ this was not so, however. A covert double stile, where Shady and Dumb Blonde encountered some difficulty, led us North and into Fifehead Wood. Then ensued rather a lot of disorder as the pack struggled to find the On, with Birdseye doing sterling work down a very long falsie, but eventually the trail was found and another short climb before the next whip-in.

Here, we were warned by the hares to stay together and to keep our voices down so as not to disturb the horses. The assembled hounds tiptoed forward admiring the various lit dressage paddocks. A steep climb brought the pack to the top of Stour Hill Farm where we followed the track through the stables and then we were checking along the road, where Strider found the last whip-in.

Across the A30, then a long stretch up Kington Hill caused the pack to string out again. Then a steep right hand turn and another long stretch, blessedly downhill this time. Then, as the last check fell out of living memory, the pack finally stumbled across one, but the On was quickly called left across the field preventing any catching of breath. A last downhill through West Stour and the trail led the pack nice and quickly back to the pub, for those who didn’t take the detour anyway.

Changing took less time than usual as the pack hurried out of the cold and into the pub where Emptier was so grateful for the warmth that he curled up in a corner and went to sleep. The plates of fish and chips and the beers went down very well after another good hash. Our collective thanks go to Jibber and Kinky Bugger for laying an interesting trail with some long gallops, which on reflection we seemed to complete pretty quickly.

On Words’ Footnote: Perhaps Emptier should be re-handled Dormouse??
