THE WORDS
The intrepid hounds and social hounds met in the middle of Farnham outside the Museum, blocking the village traffic. Emptier arrived on foot having run from Blandford. Birdseye, today’s hare, briefed the assembled throng promptly at 1125hrs, one blob and you’re on were the main points. Madness took the obligatory photograph.
As there were 4 or 5 different possible directions, the pack was spread far and wide. Quelque Chose chose the correct trail heading east away from the village centre to the first check. Where once again the pack went in all directions, Ronlet & Walt into a field but this proved fruitless.
The correct trail was back towards the village, skirting around the church into the large field at the back of Birdseye’s kennel and onto the road. From the next check, across the road the packed eventually headed away from the village with The Slobby Uno♂ and Strider leading. Arriving at a small copse the trail went cold. Silent Running led the pack off the trail around the far side. The hare dropped a hint to Walt, who led the back markers including Jibber and Kinky Bugger into the copse, where BrEW took a dive and got his new dayglo jacket dirty.
At the next check which was on the Wiltshire/Dorset border, the pack was once again spread in all directions. Day Glo, eventually picked the correct trail which was indicated as a private path. This path continued along a valley and went on for ever and ever and ever, led by The Slobby Uno♂ and Strider which spread the pack over a good half mile from front to back where Walt joined by Kinky Bugger was occupying his normal position. Eventually the first false trail was picked up by the front runners, who had to turn back, and in true hashing tradition, Walt was now leading the pack. The pack changed order several times, with Emptier gradually running out of steam; we soon arrived at the pond in centre of Tollard Royal where, we were provided with festive drinks and nibbles. We all enjoyed the well deserved rest.
Soon we were off again. Day Glo headed towards the King John, which proved false. Quelque Chose and Quelque Chose (Jnr) picked the correct trail closely followed by Ronlet heading in an easterly direction (was this towards home we thought). We soon passed the Larmer Tree and to our complete surprise stumbled across another stop for drinks and nibbles. There was even a table cloth laid.
Following our rest, the packed was herded across the road into a large wood and we soon encountered the next check at a fork in the path. Day Glo went off into the woods but Strider picked the correct trail with The Slobby Uno♂ not far behind. Walt was offered a short cut by the Hare, which he graciously accepted at this point in the proceedings but as a result missed the wildlife drama when a couple of (old) deer were startled by the pack – one managing to ‘escape’ through an unfeasibly small hole in a wire fence and the other grunting its dissatisfaction at being thwarted in his efforts to do likewise. Brought the pack to a temporary halt though.
We were now out of the woods and heading south in the direction of Chettle and home along a well worn muddy path but soon well hidden, was yet another drinks stop, which again was well accepted and enjoyed by all.
By now we could almost see the church tower of Farnham and were in familiar hashing territory, just had to cross that long field at the back of Birdseye’s kennel and we would be home.
An enjoyable well planned run on a brisk festive feeling Sunday morning. Congratulations to Birdseye for his efforts. We then repaired to Birdseye’s kennel for some well deserved drinks & food.
