Hares, Hounds and Hash Stats
THE WORDS
The pack gathered in the public car park at the Southern end of Gore Heath on a wet and very windy Sunday morning. The hare had warned as many of us as possible by phone the day before to ignore the “Closed road” signs around East Morden. The car park was crowded by dog walkers and our hares, BrEW and Ronlet, expressed their concern over possible sabotage especially as they had to relay part of the trail on Saturday having been sabotaged as they laid the rest of the trail. We welcomed a new hound to the pack - Circus Boy. The briefing saw the pack huddled against the wind – dabs either side but not in the middle, some smilies (back to the last dab), some whip-ins and some general discussion about the various hash signs used by various hashes. Madness (still unable to run) took the photo to allow BrEW a rare chance to feature in the picture and we were off.
Warthog led the pack away to the North from the car park and chose the correct option at the next check again northwards. Silent Running and Circus Boy then had turns in the lead as we moved east. Then we turned North again to a whip-in where we were joined, for the first of many times, by Madness (but able to walk). After a breather we ran West and then North again to another check. Soon afterwards Pet Rescue led us to the first smilie, then through some close woodland and on to a check. Here we noticed BrEW drift away from the pack and sure enough after a semi-circular trot through the woods we appeared at a junction with BrEW present. Next we charged up a “pimple” to trig point 44 and another breather. Pet Rescue then led us away downhill where we copped for another smilie. Then the unpalatable subject of “Words” came up and Ronlet pinged me to do them much to the mirth of Jibber, who admitted he had thought about mentioning it but decided not to in case he got nominated (you wait until next time!). At the next check Madness was there again to enjoy the pack checking unsuccessfully uphill. We then ran 3 sides of a square and along a narrow winding trail through the woods with Walt leading (how do the hares find these tiny trails?) and over another steep pimple.
At the next check there was a good puddle for Alamein to get his customary drink and bath all in one. At the check after that Madness (again!) asked Circus Boy how he got his handle – so he gave us a headstand and got a good round of applause. We moved South to the next whip in/check which seemed strangely familiar – especially as Madness was there! A lively debate took place including Kinky Bugger and Jibber about the merits of various directions and how checks can be re-laid mid-run. Silent Running chose the Southern option and the pack followed him down a “reused” bit of the trail to the next check where he chose the route to the East which proved to be a very long falsie. Ronlet thoroughly enjoyed waving him on to the cross about 200 metres away before she vanished into the woods after the rest of the pack! It made Madness chuckle too.
After another couple of checks we came to a five way junction led by Circus Boy. Here Silent Running and Alamein gamely ran 2 falsies to romp into last place, which made Warthog laugh as he could see the car park from the check. After a most distinctive “BH3” the “On In” was a good but slippery gallop downhill.
My personal thanks go to the hares who kindly gave me a map of the run afterwards so I could seem in these words as if I had perfect recall – actually I had no idea where we had been. After his sterling drinks stop activities over the Christmas season and as we saw him so many times on this hash ‘On Pres awarded Madness a full run count to add to his score.
After changing in the very cold and windy car park, we moved by car to the Sandford Pub for beers, where we were joined by Elle and where Circus Boy treated us (and a few shocked onlookers) to his party piece of a headstand on a bar table preceded by a good loud announcement. Then we walked the 150 yards to the nearby Gurkha Bar and Oriental Restaurant where we ate as much as we could for £7.50 washed down with Gurkha beer – all very highly recommended. Our grateful thanks go to BrEW and Ronlet for laying such a devious and cunning trail as well as laying on outstanding food and drink.
