THE WORDS

8 hashers and 1 hare assembled in the Gaggle of Geese car park, after some searching for the pub. Pet Rescue gave the briefing, explaining it would be about a 5 mile course, some hills, some smiley faces. Ronlet debated whether it was wise to run, having been reintroduced to the contents of her evening meal during the course of the night. Silent Running assumed this was due to an overindulgence of the hop or grape – a calumny, even though there was much to celebrate (well, for one hasher) following the rugby scores. A bracing run on a clear Spring day could be just the tonic …

After the traditional photograph it was ‘checking’ out from the pub. BrEW & Ronlet found the correct trail up the hill away from the pub. On to the next check was called and the pack ran down past the church only for Silent Running to find the first ‘Smiley’. Back up the lane, we found the trail through the back of the church yard across a short field and we were nearly back to the pub. No one fancied going back to the pub this early so Walt checked up the hill but On On was called by Quelque Chose across another field. We were then out on to a farm track and down the hill into a lane, where the pack found another check. Walt tried his luck to the left, but the trail had to go up a very inviting steep hill led by Ronlet and Silent Running. The hill proved to be quite a challenge for the hashers, as they reduced to a walking pace – well, it was a Sunday.

Nearing the top of the hill and BrEW found a second ‘smiley’ but carried calling On On to encourage hashers up to the top. Nothing like a caring, sharing hasher! We all dropped back down the hill and found another path around the side through a small wood. It was then On to the top again. Once the group gathered at the top of the hill Quelque Chose was already checking again and raced off out of sight across the top of the field. Pet Rescue had to take chase after him and tell him to come back. After some searching for the trail, the group went along the front of the hill and over the top to drop down into another field. Once out of the fields and into a lane Quelque Chose found the trail up a very steep and stony path way, bringing us out on to a bridleway. A short cut was offered but nobody required it (except Ronlet who was struggling now but was too stupid to take it). A ‘whip in’ was called at the top of the next hill, which seemed to go on forever, and fortunately the hare pointed us in the direction of the ‘On In’.

It was to be back down the hill on a grass track which turned into a stony clay mess. Out into the lane and it was just around the corner to the pub. We arrived back at the pub about 90 minutes later, quite out of breath and in need of a pint. A very good trail had been laid with some well located smiley faces.
