Hares, Hounds and Hash Stats

THE WORDS

The intrepid 10 Hashers met at the Rising Sun on the A30 outside of Shaftesbury. Warthog, today’s Hare, provided a written brief for the assembled throng and promptly disappeared to set the live trail. BrEW took the obligatory photograph.

Warthog’s only clue was that the off was in an easterly direction along the A30, which the pack set off on at 6.30 sharp led by Crazy Fool. At the first check Kinky Bugger picked the right trail in the direction of Middle Combe a small hamlet half a mile on in a valley.

At the next check the pack was scattered in 3 different possible directions. Jibber went north straight ahead, Silent Running went East and Kinky Bugger went West, along a very muddy track (typical Warthog country), calling the On until we all came across the first of many smiley faces. The correct trail was North (the first of Jibber’s attempts at checking).

The trail was now heading north into the Wiltshire countryside, Ronlet & Walt were bringing up the rear and Crazy Fool was now at the helm. The next check was soon upon us. Crazy Fool and Craig found false trails Jibber picked correctly, the remainder of the pack was on his heels.

We soon arrived at the rear of St Mary’s School and presumed that we would be taking the footpath in the Shaftesbury direction, which was incorrect. Whilst here we enjoyed a break as the trail went cold. Crazy Fool once again disappeared off the face of the earth (well, Wiltshire) for about 10 minutes following a false trail. Living up to his Handle.

Jibber eventually found the footpath leading away from St Mary’s School, Crazy Fool had returned from his trip away, Hidden Depths and Silent Running closely following. At the next check, Silent Running picked the correct trail, which headed downhill following a very muddy river bed (typical Warthog country), Walt and Hidden Depths decided to take it steady, Crazy Fool powered ahead with Ronlet in his wake.

At the next check, with Ludwell in the distance, Walt went towards the village, Kinky Bugger chose a path in almost the same direction but they were both wrong. Ronlet picked the correct trail this time, which eventually led the pack into a field with a variety of horses (Ronlet’s favourite animals).

At the next check, confusion reigned again; Crazy Fool found the correct trail down the road but was not confident enough to call “On” as it could have been part of the outward leg which we had run up an hour or so before. After a meeting between Ronlet and Walt, and taking into consideration the time and the fact that this was a probably a Warthog ploy to confuse, the pack did head down. We eventually caught up with Warthog back at Middle Combe, where Alan was found lurking in the bushes.

Back at the Rising Sun an impromptu meeting was held and Alan was given his Hash-Handle “Orson” – this confused Warthog no end – check his surname!!

An enjoyable well planned run on a cold Monday evening. Congratulations to Warthog for his efforts. We then repaired to The Half Moon Shaftesbury for some well deserved drinks & food.
