Hares, Hounds and Hash Stats

THE WORDS

As we turned into the Crown car park at Marnhull to see a group of hashers already there, it dawned on us that we might have forgotten to pick up Warthog. An easy mistake to make and it earned us a frosty glare when he eventually drove up under his own steam.

The Hare gave the briefing - all false trails marked, at least one smiley face and some whip-ins. After a photograph or two taken by social hound Madness, Silent Running advised “One blob and you’re on!” Warthog found the first blob only then to find the first false trail. The On On was called by Ronlet down Church Hill to the check at Pilwell Lane, where Walt then uncovered the next leg of the trail, but actually only on four blobs calls the On. Around Burton Street the next check by the phone box was missed by Jibber but found by Kinky Bugger. From here Birdseye picked up the trail around a ploughed field. Some of the hounds took a short cut across the field – and why not! We emerged out into Sackmore Gardens to find Madness, who had made up the ground with the aid of the Hare’s map. On to the next check in Sackmore Lane where the On was called by Warthog through fields to Kentisworth Road. Birdseye and Jibber took up the running at the front of the pack around a ploughed field to the corner of Common Lane.

At this check there was some delay as no one could find the trail. Jibber looked over the stile for a sign of saw dust but did not commit to going over it until everyone else had found false trails. He then decided it was probably a good move and went over the stile to find the trail On down through the field to a check. After some more checking, Jibber going down and to the right, Birdseye going straight on and Kinky Bugger going tentatively up the hill, Birdseye returned and proceeded down the left side of the field. He called the On down to Common Lane where we found a lamb had got loose from a field near by. There were some rumblings about Jibber ‘pulling’ the lamb as he went by – unfair on the lamb really! After informing those living next to the field about the lost sheep and a comment from Ronlet about ‘Bo Peep’, we assembled at a whip in at the end of the lane.

At the check the On was called up a steep Cox Hill to a check at the millstones. The trail was then picked up through Sheppards Close Farm, through the field with Birdseye out front followed by Silent Running. The Hare almost stopped dead in his tracks at this point, alerting Kinky Bugger to the possibility that the smiley face must be around the corner. He had already slowed down as Birdseye came back having found the promised smiley face. A large pool of water off to the left drew Warthog’s attention. So convinced was he that this was a special treat planned by the Hare, he eagerly strode into it having raised the electric wire cordoning it off. It had no appeal whatsoever for the other hashers and he was left stranded in the deep water, when the On was called by Birdseye back up the field. Nice one! But the trick on Warthog backfired, so to speak - at the field exit Silent Running held open the gate for the hounds only to get a bolt up the backside for his efforts. Made the eyes water.

At the whip-in in Mowes Lane Warthog went straight up the field to find a false trail, Birdseye headed around the field and called the On around to another smiley which diverted us back into the field. The trail took us along the side of the hedge and Birdseye, on a roll, went straight on at the next check only to find a false trail. Jibber’s choice along the hedge was also a false trail and Ronlet also drew a blank. Craig with local knowledge pointed out the footpath going straight on but Silent Running gave a little hint the trail was up the other side of the hedge around the top to a check. Jibber and Ronlet took the wrong route and the On was called back to were we were around five minutes before. The trail now led to a third smiley and then on through the field to Butts Close. The pack was very wary now and needed a little help as the On In was missed by Jibber. After Silent Running had tipped us the wink, we all raced back to the Crown for some well earned refreshment.
