THE WORDS
We gathered in the car park of the The Fox to be greeted by Ronlet in a state of flux, with a rather convincing story of her just returning from Kent by car with BrEW flying an aircraft to Henstridge. Tales of woe about being rushed and that BrEW might not be able to make the hash were offered(should have smelt a rat at this point). Ronlet then proceeded to give a brief and duly took the group photograph, many years experience of watching BrEW taking the Hash photographs had paid off with a professional bending of the knees for the second picture. The hounds were asked to place their orders for food prior to embarking on the Hash and at this point some debate occurred about what time we would return, I then remembered Ronlet’s e-mail regarding needing a second pair of lungs for this hash.
First dab detected and off we went along the road heading for Breach Wood, Jibber and Kinky Bugger leading the way, paying great respect to a lone horse rider who must have thought what a strange sight.
At the end of the wood we headed up through the farm with Walt crushing all thoughts of an easy hash with his intricate local knowledge. We came to a 3-way check to be met by a grumpy old farmer brandishing a stick, who tried to impart his thoughts on which way we should go and getting us confused with the Dorset Doddlers. It took a little time to pick up the correct trail, lots of dust around, some left by the Doddlers and Ronlet had to provide a little prompting. We should have known, it would be up – Hidden Depths’s heart hit his boots as the rest of the hounds started to talk about the Dorset Gap. Up we went heading for Nordon Hill, we traversed a field with a wide track and in the middle was a check by a water tower, which led to much debate about the engineering aspect of its build and whether or not it was full with water. Two Shoes had galloped a good distance up a false trail before hearing the “On On” and recommencing the climb to the top of Nordon Hill and a well deserved whip-in. At this point we could make out Two Shoes’s summer residence, a rather grand looking house, supposedly owned by a farmer. It looked as if it should belong to Royalty.
Suitably rested we started checking, once we found the correct trail, we had to navigate our way through a herd of cows, being a little unsure of their nature we followed, at some distance, Silent Running, dressed in his very RED shirt. Once passed the cows we started the descent and came to a check, Silent Running, Jibber and Kinky Bugger were certainly earning their beer tonight, checking the trails, to mutterings of “I thought all false trails were marked”. Time was passing painfully slowly, the hour mark had been and gone and it was evident we were a long way from the end. Two Shoes was gently goading Walt about how his sausages would be well and truly cremated by the time we returned. Just prior to the “On On” being heard, Ronlet remarked that we were going to like the next field, not a lot, how correct she was. It was like crossing the “Battle of the Somme”, deeply rutted, hard as rock, the pace was painfully slow. Once crossed we entered a wooded area. Warthog would have been at home here, water and mud abounded, it was a blessed relief after the previous field. The trail had a familiar look about it, we had been here before, something was a miss, the trail and been re-laid but by who. Walt had cottoned on much earlier, that BrEW had joined the hash and was busy re-laying the trail. After exiting Hill Wood and at the next check, Walt spied a sign saying Ansty 1 mile, only to be given a withering look from Ronlet who directed us on a trail away from the village. However, Jibber and Kinky Bugger had scented the finish and with cries of “On On” off we dashed (rather slowly for some of us) towards the finish. Never has an “On In” sign looked so good.
Once back at the pub, more drama was to unfold. After enjoying a hearty meal and beer, tiredness began to creep in, so much so, that Two Shoes, Walt and Silent Running left without paying. There is no truth in the rumour that it was like a scene from the “Sweeney” with screeching tyres from their vehicles leaving the pub car park or that Two Shoes had harnessed up an Emu from the field next to pub and was seen disappearing into the night like a highwayman.
Thank you to Ronlet and BrEW for a very long but extremely enjoyable hash.
