THE WORDS
The intrepid 11 met in the car park at the top of Spread Eagle Hill in deepest North Dorset complete with a breathtaking view over the rest of the county. The locals were getting annoyed as we were using their dog walking area. Hidden Depths & Two Shoes went to the car park at Compton Abbas Airfield, just to be different.
Warthog, tonight’s Hare, briefed the assembled throng promptly at 1830 hours, giving a practical demonstration of some new signs in dust and flour for us to look out for. BrEW took the obligatory photograph.
We were given a clue and a point in the general direction of the C13, so Walt led the pack to the first check. Here, the trail went cold for some time. Silent Running headed south, Walt looked downhill but didn’t go (never check downhill). Remaining hounds checked in the immediate vicinity.
Eventually, the On went across the C13 into the woods (away from the slopes downhill) where Jibber took the lead to the next check, then Ronlet took up the challenge and led for the next 5 or 6 checks but eventually her luck ran out. Meanwhile, we were in true Warthog country - mud, water and more mud and water. Some of us managed to avoid it … some didn’t.
After about 30 minutes of being disorientated in the woods, Walt & BrEW were given a short cut and we then found ourselves back at the C13 for a whip-in and a chance to get our breath back.
We crossed the road heading towards open country and the downhill slopes. At the next check Drama Queen checked downhill (never check downhill) Jibber went right and Kinky Bugger went left, which proved to be the On, but soon the pack let by Hidden Depths at this point over ran a stile and reached the first smiley face.
At the next check, Silent Running checked downhill, this time this was the On. Hilary went right which proved false. Walt & Hidden Depths waited at the top until Warthog gave out another short cut.
The On called by Ronlet continued along a gently downhill sloping path betweens the hills for about a mile, eventually arriving at a stile, where, we were confronted by lots of cows and a bull in the next field. It was time to go uphill, this was conducted at a gentle pace as not to stampede yet another herd of cows. Eventually, we arrived at a long awaited whip-in at the tope of the hill over looking Iwerne Minster and Fontmell Magna.
From this check, the pack split, Two Shoes decided to check away from the home direction (not a wise decision), Kinky Bugger went right, BrEW & Ronlet went across a field following a well worn track, which proved to be the On (after tricking the whole pack by turning around and running back towards the check). However, they were hoisted by their own petard when they came across a smiley, too.
The car park was now in sight (although about a mile away) and we enjoyed a run in, negotiating a slight incline on the way.
Following a quick change by all, Hidden Depths went back to the Airfield car park only to find his car was locked in, but after some frantic arm waving managed to get the attention of someone to free his car to allow him to get home.
An enjoyable, well-planned run on a warm June Monday evening. Congratulations to Warthog for his usual excellent trail. We then repaired to The Crown at Fontmell Magna for some well deserved drink and food.
