THE WORDS
On arrival at the Fiddleford Inn Orson greeted us. It was a good solid turnout of eleven keen and athletic individuals. We all posed for the obligatory photo in front of the pub sign. As BrEW was about to click the shutter, someone noticed Quelque Chose overshoot the turning, heading for Sturminster. We all held the pose and waited for him to reverse precariously along the road and park up. The obligatory photo was taken and the, now twelve, athletes headed off in different directions.
Madness, Drama Queen and Emptier headed towards Fiddleford Manor but found a false trail and ambled back towards the pub. Meanwhile others were milling around with a sense of “Where do we go now?” Eventually Jibber found the trail over the road and we headed off towards the woods. The trail took us across a couple of fields and down alongside the wood to a check. Birdseye found a smiley face up in the woods.
Here there was lots of flaffing (running around in circles with much indecision) around and looking for the trail (although some hashers seemed more interested in the view over the nearby ‘Calgon’ real estate). We found the odd dab but could not find a sequence. Warthog told Orson off for putting sawdust on the wrong side of the gate. Eventually we found the trail and headed off down the side of the field and then diagonally across the field to a stile. We bore left along the road to a Y-junction passing some aggravated Rottweilers which Ronlet felt would have been better housed behind more substantial garden gates.
The trail then led on up the lane towards Broad Oak but then took the footpath left across a couple of fields towards the old dog kennels. At this stage Emptier seemed to pick the right trails - obviously local knowledge from running with the Doddlers.
At the next check after the Broad Oak ‘community orchard’ the Hare decided not to inflict the pack on the Broad Oak inhabitants. Instead the trail took us right and across a couple of more fields up to the old chicken farm (phew!) and along the road into Piddles Wood. Here there was plenty of choice and the pack burst in all directions. A sign urging us to watch out for overhead limbs had Ronlet running along waving her arms in the air. Drama Queen wondered whether it was a shortage of glucose. While we were in the woods, Warthog managed to get detached from the back of the pack a couple of times. We had to wait for him and once we regrouped he told us all off for leaving him behind. Another spot of humbrage.
We left the woods and crossed the main road and headed down to Fiddleford farm and manor. We were all looking for the route to head away from the pub but alas we headed up the footpath behind the houses back to the pub. A short run but still very enjoyable. [And the wordster was right – it was threatening to rain and decided to do so when we sat out in the beer garden, admiring Orson’s fashionable shorts].
