Hares, Hounds and Hash Stats

THE WORDS

The intrepid 14 met in the car park of The Ox Inn at Shillingstone. Silent Running & Strider, tonight’s hares, briefed the assembled ‘throng’ promptly at 1830, giving a practical demonstration of the signs for the benefit of visiting hasher Trudy. BrEW took the obligatory photograph. One and On was the only clue.

We headed in the general direction of Blandford along the A350 between the hills of Hambledon, Hod and Okeford, led by Kinky Bugger to the first check. Here, the trail followed a footpath through a quiet, residential area towards the village cricket pitch, where we came across another check.

Eventually, the On went on to the cricket field, where the trail went cold for a short while. Jibber, Warthog, Ronlet & Trudy went in all directions, however, Emptier eventually found the next check, which was on the former Somerset & Dorset railway track. Again, Emptier took the lead heading in the direction of Blandford. At the next check, Kinky Bugger took up the challenge and continued along the railway track. Quelque Chose and Emptier went off the rails left and right respectively. Once again Emptier was lucky and led to the first whip-in on the main road. By now there was lots of evidence of sabotage to the trail markings.

Following a short rest Emptier spotted the village trail across the road in the direction of Okeford Hill, we reluctantly followed for the next 2 or 3 checks but eventually his luck ran out and Madness took over at the foot of the hill with Walt & BrEW early casualties of the long gradual climb.

At the next check, Madness & Quelque Chose went left and Warthog continued up-hill. At this point Silent Running offered a short cut to the back markers but this was not taken up.

Meanwhile, we were in true Warthog country, mud and more mud, some of us managed to avoid it, some didn’t, following a path around the foot of Okeford Hill heading towards Blandford. After about a mile we reached the whip-in, where there were two options. Jibber went left, which was on the level and Sloe went uphill, which quickly proved the correct trail. So we all embarked on another long uphill slog.

On reaching the summit of Okeford Hill we reached a well deserved check. The trail then went cold for a while, Emptier and Warthog went towards open country, Trudy, Jibber & Kinky Bugger checked the paths into the woods, Walt & BrEW took the opportunity for a rest. Quelque Chose eventually found the On, which gradually headed down an incline into the woods.

Having got our breath back on a gentle trot we arrived at the next check deeper into the woods, Ronlet went left uphill, Madness continued on the path, Emptier went downhill (never check downhill), although this time quickly proved correct. This part of the trail was going down the summit of Okeford Hill, it proved very slippery and wet in places, however, no casualties were taken.

We eventually re-grouped at a whip-in at the bottom of the hill and admired a large modern country house and ‘Home’ was now in the distance.

One and On was given by the Hares, however, we soon got to our first cunning smiley face, so it was back to the last blob. The trail followed a hidden path through an overgrown hedge into a field. Here Warthog followed his own trail but soon rejoined the pack, Madness then decided to take a comfort break, fortunately, Ronlet & Trudy had already passed heading to the outskirts of Shillingstone. In the leafy suburbs we nearly lost Quelque Chose, whilst the remainder of the pack were on the final run in.

An enjoyable well planned run on a muggy September Monday evening. Congratulations to Silent Running & Strider for their well planned run. We then repaired into the recently reopened Ox Inn for some well deserved drink & food and as the title of the hash words indicate a free bottle of wine (those who made an early exit missed out).
