THE WORDS

You could not have asked for a better evening. The rain had gone, the sun was out, the visibility excellent and the temperature just right. The pack formed up wondering, therefore, just why it was that most of BH3 was not already straining at the leash! Silent Running gave the briefing – “about 4 miles; dabs on the right except sometimes; would have been shorter but for the bull”! With that encouragement ringing in their ears the pack set off – not entirely certain whether the final route did or did not involve large bovines.

Anxious to show that, even if it was his 100th hash, he was not going to be left behind, Buggalugs led the pack (led in turn, as ever, by Lugs Too) onto the first part of the run. He compounded this folly by reaching the first check before anyone else and even managed to select the correct trail having spotted a cunning dab in the middle of a field. Alas, it was not to last and it took only one more check to put him in his rightful place as a determined back-marker. But give the man a chance – have you seen his post-op scar?!

Back onto the main road, the pack quickly sussed the next check by correctly assessing that the right trail was the one that was a. up and b. muddy. Pausing at the top for a whip-in the pack then moved towards some inviting woodland where the trail just had to be down into the gully didn’t it? Well, no actually, Warthog, it was most definitely up but were BrEW’s and Birdseye’s cries of “On! On!” a tad quiet to stop him from getting too far down? Eventually the lure of the trees was too much and the pack duly headed into some close country in Ashley Wood. By taking an economical of his own design, Buggalugs was first to the top and used his time wisely working out that signs warning of “low-flying golf balls” probably indicated that paths onto the golf course were false trails. Leading downhill towards Rawston Down the pack had the vague scent of being on the right trail although it took Buggalugs’ sharp eyes (most unusual for a centenarian) to spot a cunningly positioned check. While Birdseye and BrEW, who were already well ahead, tried to remember just how many dabs they had passed since that point, Warthog gallantly checked out this (false) trail…but was there a scent of something else in the wind, maybe something with a sort of, well, bullsh** smell?

At this point a slightly embarrassed Silent Running admitted that this was the bit where he had attracted the interest of a passing “big boy” who had decided to take time off some serious heffer-humping to check him out. No wonder he was bloody knackered after laying the trail! Taking the somewhat safer, but no less fragrant, route of the main road, the pack skirted round the herd and dropped down towards the Tarrant Valley. Here the farmer had very kindly ensured that the public footpath was clear by laying something akin to agent orange on the direct path across his crops – the yellow wheat road?

A couple more checks and the pack found itself over the river and running along “The Cliff” (where Silent Running seemed to attract even more herds of cows) before reaching a well-earned “BH3” a few hundred meters from the pub. Forget Me Not appeared as if by magic bearing the Tipple Mug but Buggalugs still very kindly bought the hare and hounds a beer to celebrate reaching treble figures – another good reason for being there! There is, by the way, no truth in the rumour that Buggalugs will be bringing his bus pass and zimmer frame on the next hash!
